Newby question about my 16 Sierra

Hi everyone,

New to the forum, and new to GM trucks. I just bought my first GMC Sierra last week, a crew cab SLT. I'll start by saying I looked at all truck manufacturers and none came close to how nice the Sierras and Silverado were.

Anyway, my truck only came with the trailering equipment package and not the max package, so I didn't have the max towing pkg. I ordered a brake controller from etrailer and watched the videos. Early this AM I went out to try and install it and right where I wanted to mount the controller I saw this (pic). I paged through the entire manual and browsed this forum, but I don't know what it is.

Can someone enlighten me?

I know that i could google for the answer but is the "odb2 port" where a technician hooks up to a computer for diagnostics?

Correct, and programming.

Yes it is.

Man your truck looks sharp! I'm usually not a fan of lowered trucks, but the stance on yours is just right for a 2wd ( I assumed it's 2wd).

What type LED's did you use in your taillights?

You dont really want to block that connector but if your brake controller is on a bracket and can easily be removed or moved out of the way its not big deal. Dealer/self diagnostics and emission control tests need access to that connector.

Just make sure you put the brake controller where you can reach it easily for adjustment and if you need to manually apply the trailer brakes quickly.

here is a thread on 2014 but I bet the 2016 is the same,

looks like it might be helpful? Apparently they were supplying free adaptor harnesses for aftermarket brake controllers. The factory OEM setup cannot be added onto a truck that did not come with that option so the info says but apparently it is super easy to add a aftermarket controller..

Yep...that's what I was working towards. My normal driving position allows me to see through the steering wheel directly at the controller. That way I can easily reach down with my left hand if needed. I know many here mount it above the gas pedal, but my view of that area is completely obstructed, and since I like to sit with my seat close, I think clearance might have been an issue.

I ended up mounting it on the slanted dash panel nearer the left side.

Thanks!! Those are Eagle Eyes. I got them off eBay but I think there are other places that sold them at the time (April, 2014). Yes, it's a 2-wheel drive.

It is really easy. I added an after market BC using the supplied hardware that's in the glove box. 20 min job

Actually it can but not many people are willing to pay for the custom BCM.
