I believe GM went to the SAE J2807 towing standards in 2016 thereby lowering the tow limits compared to the 2015 link above.

It's my understanding GM went to SAE J2807 in '14 with the 1/2 tons and '15 with the HD's. Good question. I'll also add, that if you plan on using a goose neck ball, that you change the pin box on your 5th wheel, to a " Goose Box" as it is the only goose neck ball pin box that WILL NOT void your 5th wheel's ( frame ) warranty or cause any other not so nice things to happen to your fiver.

It is totally crazy that the 1015 2500HD duramax CC can tow 17,100 lbs with a 5th wheel hitch, but a year later a 2016 2500 HD Duramax can only tow 13,900. That is a 3,200 lb difference in towing capacity. The 17,100 lb towing capacity is more like what I expected and was told. What is the difference between the two years. Now I know that you were discussing the SAE J 2807 towing standards. What are those all about, who sets those standards, when did Chevy switch over to them and why. The more information that is posted, about all of this the crazier it gets. My sales rep is now going crazy with all of the information that I have provided him. As of last night, he informed me that he was going to call Detroit this morning and get the inside scoop on all of this. Now he is ready to start drinking. LOL

That is a 3,200 lb difference in towing capacity. The 17,100 lb towing capacity is more like what I expected and was told. What is the difference between the two years. hhhmmmm..............that is something, eh? don't know what to say there. SAE stands for " Society Of Automotive Engineers" they have set many standards that are used for benchmarks in manufacturing across different platforms, so as to create one standard of a standard of measurement. in the case of tow ratings, before the SAE standards, the manufactures were able to set their own bench mark for achieving their tow #'s. read "cheat" or "fudge" them, so when a customer was comparing the #'s across the brands, it really wasn't an apples to apples comparison. the SAE does that. as it stands, I don't think ford has adopted it yet.

Where can we find the capacity of the 2015 in writing on the web? That article claimed they switched to J2807 for 2015. That doesn't explain the 2015 model being higher than the 2016?

Those Max towing weight numbers are meaningless and complete waste of time continuing to focus on them. How much you can tow depends on a few things. The specific GCWR of your truck (found in owners manual). The specific GVWR of your truck (found on sticker on drivers side door area). The actual weight of your truck ready to tow. The actual tongue/pin weight and total weight of trailer.

Once you have these numbers you can determine if you can be within the tow ratings of your specific truck.
