Slightly different spin on this topic...after the dealership replaced the cabin air filter I started noticing a whirring or tapping sound that goes away when you turn off the HVAC. Quickly found that it's the fan that sucks air down through the cabin air filter. I took the filter out and expected to see a leaf or something in there but can't see anything, doing my best with a mirror to see the whole way around. Anyone else run into this?

Yes. You have a piece of debris in the blower. I have large hands and my compressor didn't work, so I took the blower out and one tiny piece of leaf had fallen into the blower. I wish there was a relief cut above the filter so when it is removed it doesn't "Scrape" the leaves and other debris off and down into the blower housing. The black cover isn't fun to remove and one screw couldn't be reinstalled as the angle is jsut too sharp to get the screw back in with a driver on it, it resides in my glove box..... This last time I changed it, I again had a leaf fall into the blower, but lucky for me my air compressor got it out.

Crap design if you ask me.....

Any advice or pointers on how to get the blower out?

remove the black cover above pass side footwell, then just remove the blower with a few screws and a plug. simple

Wow.... bringing up this old topic, but I never found an answer to the original question. Where is the cabin air intake? I changed out the cabin filter and found stems, whole leaves, lots of debris. I don't understand how those get inside the intake. There certainly are no openings that large by the wipe cowling where they could simply fall in. The only area that seems to collect large leaves is in front on the radiator area, at the bottom part of the grill. Lots of branches and large leaves trapped there.

Does anyone have an old service manual with a diagram of the HVAC?

Hi Newbie here,

I have a 2018 with the Mouse Motel problem and tried to open the pic at the top of this page(3) but  have not been able to. ??
Does anyone have any pics, experiences or other help they'd like to share.

Thanks in advance

No way a rodent is making into that intake system. It is on the wiper cowl.

Haha. Searched for a way to add a screen and came across this post. Here's my mouse I pulled out of the cabin filter.  http://imgur.com/a/cC1HgCE

The plastic cowl under the windshield wipers covers a type of tunnel area which houses the  wiper motor and linkages and also the air intake to the cabin blower motor.  This area is sealed against rodents and debris EXCEPT for vertical openings on the ends (between the fender and the ends of this channel). Plug these holes and you will stop rodents and garbage from going through the blower and plugging the cabin air filters.  We had squirrels/chipmunks dragging anything/everything in through this opening on a 2002 Sierra 2500HD. NOTE: leave small holes for drainage of water.  Eventually these small holes may plug with accumulated muck and you will have to remove your plug and clean out and reinsert the plug. A better fix would be to fasten a screen ontop of the blower air intake that is in this tunnel.  You can access this intake by prying off a panel on passenger side of this tunnel that is factory sealed with caulk and painted over. (Not obvious that it is a removable panel)

I have a Dutch Shepherd that that is a Search n Rescue and travels in my 2014 Silverado and his scent gets in the vents when fan is turned on. Your answer still doesn't explain how his smell stays in vent system. I just changed cabin filter and it was disgustingly dirty and filled with dog hair. How is this getting into the circulation system? Where does the air inside the truck get brought into the cabin filter?

Changing cabin filter I noticed coming out it had loads of pecan shells and all kinds of crap on it.  Thought I got it all but some shells fell on the fan—-couldn’t get all them out of the fan blades so there’s quite a blade imbalance there.  Now I guess I get to pull the fan out and try to find my mouse access hole too.  Unless someone has a shortcut up their sleeve?

Did you try a shop vac to get them out?

    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it.
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
