No news on the 10spd huh?

And what have we learned from this video???

Essentially nothing IMHO!!!

The torque management in this video will never be put in the pickups. 10 gears, let alone 8 are not needed in "working" pickups........save for the "commuter/grocery getter" owner. GM has enough complaints with their 6 and 8 speeds now.

Not arguing, just saying!!

What torque management?

The new trucks will be out in 2018 as 2019 models . My guess is that the upper trim levels will get the 10 speed and the rest of trucks will be the 8 speed IMO .

TQ management basically reduces the power put down from a stop. It's to help save the transmission from people that want to feel like they're drag racing at every stop light. I personally don't like to take long to get up to speed, but I'm not as bad as I used to be and may have helped save the 4L60e in my '98 from the stupid sh*t I did in it. Let's just say that I had to replace the engine once, that engine then seized on me which is when I got rid of it and I also went through 2 rear axles. I should name it "lesson learned" since getting rid of it.

I found a chart comparing the new 10 speed ratios to the 8 speed 8L90. I added a column for the six speed 6L80 transmission ratios.

This chart you posted (thanks) just shows it's pretty much a marketing scheme for the 10 speed.

Make the first five gears a teeny tiny smidge lower then add another gear before the 1:1 gear and then another completely unneeded extra overdrive gear in order to hopefully get 1 mpg better gas mileage while driving on the freeway. The difference between 9th and 10th is a joke. The truck will probably only see 9th if going downhill completely empty and only see tenth if going down hill completely empty at speeds over 70 mph. LOL

I've always thought 6 speeds weren't quite enough, but when cars (and then trucks with the Ram in 2013) began putting 8 speeds in, that was more than sufficient.

Now, as stated, it's a marketing scheme. Probably why Ford didn't bother putting an 8 speed in their trucks. They knew they were working on the 10 speeds and if they put 8 speeds in them, there wouldn't be a reasonable need for the 10 speeds. So I think we'll see a reasonable gain in performance and fuel economy in the Ford's going from 6 gears to 10, but not in GM trucks, it'll be minuscule improvement in performance due to the minuscule lower first few gears, and possibly 1 mpg better highway driving, but that could also be accomplished with the 8 speed by lowering the ratio of the first 5 gears, and making the last 3 gears a tiny bit taller.

I highly doubt that ZL1 has ANY torque management.

Thought we were talking about the trucks and at least the K2 trucks do have TQ management... I guess I took your comment as asking what it was.

GM has already said they are bringing the 10 spd auto to 8 models in 2018. Not sure which ones but I would bet the trucks and big suv's will get it first.

Also I would say the next gen trucks will not be out till 2019 model year.

Just pointing out that it does in fact exist and they will be starting to see use in a production vehicle, although limited, this coming year. No need to get your underwear in a wad about it, the video title is pretty forth coming about what it is. Dont click on it and you dont have to watch if you dont want to.

Also pointing out that the new ZL1 is one bad bitch.

No news on the 10spd coming to this side of GM huh?

Getting back to the original question, I have been told that GM is keeping it under wraps at the Toledo Powertrain plant until the local contract is signed. GM is holding it over their heads till they get an agreement.

I imagine these transmissions won't help keep down the cost of purchase or repair! It would make more sense to me to pair the 8 or 10 speeds up with smaller engines but maybe this is part of the distant future plan!

Great question! I wonder if the focus shouldn't be on a variable/continuous type transmission. I am quite intrigued by all of the interest in the gear configurations of an automatic transmission. There is a lot of discussion on the shifting dynamics of the 6 and 8 spd. Automatic transmissions have evolved from the 2,3 + 4 speed versions. I personally find an automatic takes away significantly from the joy of driving. Maybe some of the complaints about the shortcomings of current transmissions would be eliminated if a good 4-6 spd manual floor shift was available. I do really like driving my truck, but I give no credit to the transmission! I only have an automatic because I can't buy a manual!

I totally agree. I too would rather have a 4-6 speed manual. As for the auto's we all have, 6 speed is plenty, 8 is ok... I guess, 10 speed is over kill in a PU

I'm sure smaller turbo engines are coming. We just don't know when.
