I joined this forum to learn more about the newer body style trucks. I currently have an 07 Sierra SLT 4x4. It's been a great truck for me, but I really like the look of the newer trucks and recently had the opportunity to drive a 14 GMC SLE (local small car lot has it from a local original owner). Really liked it but I see there seem to be a number of issues with these trucks. Headlights and problems with the 6 speed auto seem to be prevalent.

Long story short I was offered that 14 for what i think is a good price but I'm a little reluctant to do any thing until I know what I'm stepping into. Any thoughts on what I should really be concerned about would be appreciated.

On another thought, this truck has the center front seat flip down console. Is it possible to replace that with a floor mounted console? Physically looks doable but was unsure about wiring connectors matching up for the USB and other console mounted items.

Thanks

Phil

Early trucks were problem trucks. Why not find what you want in a second model year or newer? Remember, what you think is a good price, subtract 5k from it and that is what someone jumped at to dump that truck.

Ask the dealer to let you take an extended test drive, something like overnight or over the weekend. That will allow you to form your own idea of the headlights and just how much you like it overall. 14s can be problem trucks but i would say less than 10% of them built. Take what you read on here with a grain of salt. Had a 14 and it was great.

As far as the console goes a few have done it but think it is a bit pricey and challenging to make all electronics work.

Most people on here point out the negatives over the positives. Pretty goes that way all across the us. Especially this election. Lol.

My 14 has been great so far. Console can be added, just pricey. Expect to pay around 5-600 or so if you do the work yourself. Headlights are stupid easy. Get an HID kit and no more problems. People on here bitch about it just to be heard. 6 speed seems to be sluggish according to these forums but I have no issues with mine. Take it for an extended drive overnight and make sure to drive at least 80mph to see if it's a shaker or not. If everything checks out and most importantly you like it, then it's all good. I love my truck.

I appreciate the replies. All useful information. I will check into and extended test drive, I like the overnight idea to check out headlight brightness.

I will keep looking though the posts here to gain more information form those that have fought through problems already and lived.

Most of the headlight complaints were with sierras. My ltz 14 was fine and my lt 15 is fine too.

In my opinion more owners are going to go out of there way to complain if there is a problem. If there is no problem there is no reason to go online and talk about how much you like not having issues. Just to throw that theory out there.

The extended test drive sounds like a very good idea. Good luck with your decision.

I have had no real problems with my 14. It has 37k miles on it now. Do you have a link to the truck you are thinking of buying so we can take a look at it?

I had a '07 SLE II before buying my '16 Z71. Other than the rusting my SLE was perfect.

Any truck new or used can have glitches. But the Chevy Shake seems to be the worst issue to be concerned about as a fix is hard to come by. Headlights and the like I wouldn't be too concerned about as the fix/change is pretty easy. As suggested take a good long test drive. What I would do....be sure to get it in the interstate and ramp it up to the mid 80 mph range and put it cruise. Then hit the down/slower button one click at a time and leave it there for a bit. And keep going down to around 60 mph.

Best of luck with your decision.

That link goes to an SLT. Is that the one you are looking at? Mileage is up there for a 2014 but not crazy. Price does not seem terrible. If it rides nice and the Carfax checks out, I do not see any issues with it.

Yes, the SLT, I thought the mileage was on the high side also but not terrible. Carfax and the dealer records all look good.

Going down later to take another look and see about the extended test drive possibility.

You didn't mention the price, but with something as new as a '14 model, the price is still going to be "up there". All the Chevy and GMC dealers are running clearance sales now with at least 10K off sticker. For just a little more than the cost of a used truck, you may be able to get into a new one, with a cheaper interest rate -and- have a warranty......

He is looking at a GMC SLE, which had the crap headlights.

After looking at the link the OP posted, I personally would pass. A 2014 with 80K miles should be priced less in my opinion ($27,995). Put another $10K and get a new truck with a full warranty.
