USB in glove box always powered?

Does anyone know if the USB port in the upper part of the glove box is supposed to be powered all of the time? Is it configurable like the cigarette lighter plug in the dash via a fuse or similar?

I have a Garmin plugged into the lighter power port and would like to use the glove box USB to power my dash cam instead of adding a power splitter to the lighter port. But, since it's always powered, the camera would always be on and drawing power (and I definitely don't want that).

Not sure how that helps me.

I'm asking about the plug in the glove box, not the arm rest and not the console.

I've also noticed that this particular plug has a white plastic surround around it which is markedly different from all of the other USB ports.

as far as i know it is marked differently because it is the media usb plug. i have my usb stick with music on it and play it from there. not one of the usb plugs in my truck stays on. at least i havent found one yet.

I have a dash cam that uses a long USB cable for power. All three of the USB connectors in my truck will power up the dash cam when the truck is off. One thing to note about the cable, though, is that it does not use the inner two pins (which carry data - the outer pins carry power). Some i-devices require seeing a current / connection on the data connectors in order to power on and that may be why my iPod isn't powered all the time).

Also, what does "media USB plug" mean? I have an iPod connected to one of the ports in the armrest and it plays just fine.

No idea. I guess you could plug something in with and with out the key on and find out.

On another note i had no idea there was one in the glove box. Never open that thing.

When i bought my truck they said the USB in the glovebox was powered. It's white colored correct?

I just purchased a 2016 1500 and according to page 213 in the owners manual the USB ports are only powered when the truck is running or the ignition is in ACC mode.

I have a '15, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that isn't the case.

Is this a 2015+ thing? I am not seeing a usb in my upper glove box of my 2014 LT

I think it depends on cab version and trim level

I just checked the glove box usb port on my 2016 and it DOES remain powered after RAP. I then checked the ports in the arm rest console and they shut off after RAP. The manual did state that the power to the cigarette adapter at the bottom of the center console is linked to the battery and remains powered constantly, perhaps the glove box usb port is on that circuit as well.

RAP doesn't even factor in...

Open the passenger door, open the glove box (upper), and plug something in. It's powered. No key, no starting, no ACC position, nothing.

Same holds true for the ports in the arm rest.
