USB in glove box always powered?

Does anyone know if the USB port in the upper part of the glove box is supposed to be powered all of the time? Is it configurable like the cigarette lighter plug in the dash via a fuse or similar?

I have a Garmin plugged into the lighter power port and would like to use the glove box USB to power my dash cam instead of adding a power splitter to the lighter port. But, since it's always powered, the camera would always be on and drawing power (and I definitely don't want that).

How can I configure the cigarette lighter plug in the dash? I would like one of them to turn off with the ignition. Thanks

Move Fuse 12 in the panel on the left side of the dash. It's currently in the "always hot" position. Remove it and re-insert so that it covers the center blade and the OTHER blade (currently not covered) and you'll get Retained Accessory Power instead. On with the key, off when key is out and driver's door opens.

Noticed USB port under arm rest gives the iPhone the little lightning bolt icon while truck is off but does not charge well, very slow. The USB ports will not charge my wife's Samsung when truck running but will charge my SE iPhone fine.

Cig lighter seems to be fastest way to charge her phone.

The USB inputs in the center arm rest don’t seem to work as well as the glove box input. The music seems to skip and pause a lot in this inputs. I do not notice ANY gaps/skips when I am plugged into the glove box input. Anyone else?

awesome thanks! now will this switch both cigarette plugs to Retained Accessory Power? I only want to switch the left one to RAP only.

My first thought was to plug in an USB light and watch it closely as you shut the glove box door...kind of like trying to see if fridge light stays on when door is shut ;-)

Side topic: does anyone have trouble when you hit MEDIA and it'll display any audio from your phone as opposed to the SD card installed? Thinks it's more of an SD card issue?

Can you stream music from your phone in these trucks?? I have a retired Galaxy S5 that I use for music, can I plug it in somewhere and when the truck is on it charges my phone, while at the same time be able to stream ( Bluetooth) my music??

Just looked in my upper/lower glove boxes, no USB. My only USB ports are the three up front/center and the two in the armrest. I've also noticed that they are not always powered, but do receive power when the doors are unlocked, for 10 minutes after lock, with the key turned on, and pretty much whenever the radio has power.

All I do is stream music from my Galaxy S7. I use Spotify all the time and just connect my phone via Bluetooth then stream away. I also have an SD card plugged in with lots of other music but I find myself not even using that much anymore.

Oh and I checked my USBs, the white one in the glove box stays on when the truck is off, no key in ignition.

What trims have the USB in the glove box? I just looked in mine because I'm getting a dash cam but no USB. 2015 Sierra CC SLT AT.

It's not based on trim -- it's based on your front seat. Basically if you have a bench seat you get the glovebox USB and if you have buckets you get the USB's inside the console and in the bank of plugs below the aux switches.
