Range AFM question

Hi this is my first post. I was wondering about the Range AFM on a 2014 Sierra 5.3. I searched and I found mixed results. Some say it's good and other say check engine lights come on and trans not shifting right. Others say you can't leave it plugged in. I had one on my 2012 Silverado that I left in for 4yrs without any problems. If I was to buy one it would be the newest up to date version from Range. If you have a Range how do you like it? Any issues? Also do you leave it plugged in all the time? I will say that in my 14 I really don't notice AFM like I did in my 12 but I really want to keep this truck for a while and I'm worried about the long term harm from turning cylinders off. Thanks

I own a 2014 Silverado 5.3 and the truck has had the AFM connected since brand new I plugged it in before I left the lot Until now still running it with out an issue for me I just take it out when I go to the dealer or when the truck is parked for more the a couple of days. I also tow a 30 ' toy hauler with no tranny issues. Works well for me does what is supposed to do and if any updates send it to them for a free update. I was going to get a tuner but wanted to keep my warranty.

I have one and use it on my 5 month old 2016. I don't leave it plugged in at home, as drive in M5 around suburbia, and don't need the 2nd overdrive. I use it for long highway trips..................Just got back from a 3000 mile 12 day trip.................Range AFM delete worked perfectly.

Long term reliability? Never had an issue with any of our trucks and one of my best friends has over 200k on his tahoe with no issues (or oil consumption). People seem to be stuck on thinking it is the same system that first debuted with a few issues over a decade ago, they aren't...

So what is different on this new version verses a 2008 system.

I had one for my '14 that was purchased towards the end of 2014. It worked, but would occasionally cause "service Stabilitrak" and "Service Brake Assist" codes to pop up. Range said that I had the latest version of the software, and it shouldn't be causing the codes, but it did. If you leave it plugged in, Onstar won't be able to gather info and send your diagnostic report, and you'll have a dead battery after about 3-4 days if you haven't started the truck. I found this out after coming home from a business trip. I wasn't too impressed with the company when I tried to contact them. Using it is still much better than driving around with a shuttering, clunking, sputtering pile of garbage that is the 2014+ series of trucks, but keep in mind it's not perfect.

I am caveating this with I don't know for sure the Range AFM disabler caused my issue or not..... But with 175 miles on the truck and after installing Range my TCM went out (glitch or something) and my truck would only remain in 3rd gear. I removed Range before replacement... Dealer did not know Range was previously installed and only said that something interfered with the communications that caused the TCM to become corrupted/fail . They replaced the TCM under warranty and I sent back the Range... Since then I have been too nervous to repurchase and reinstall. I also saw on a report that apparently Texas Instruments makes some or a large portion of parts for the TCM and did a review of the failure which they also could not quite figure out what caused the corruption. Like I said don't know if Range created my issue for sure as many have not had any issues.. Just very coincidental timing with mine within a few hours of installation.

Guys I'm thinking about getting a range but I seen a orange range on autoanything and a blue range on summit racing. Which one is for a 2016 silverado 5.3?

I bought a range device and it caused the stabilitrak and brake assist lights. I also had a bad battery and once I plugged in the device, it slowly killed my battery off the rest of the way and I had to get jump starts for a good week until I figured out the device was draining my battery. Sent it back for an update at it worked perfect since April. A few weeks ago the service lights popped up again and I contacted Range about it. The "code clearing" technique they have on their website did not work even though they said it works everytime in their response to me. Also apparently there is another update available if I send it in. I got tired of the blue under dash light it emits, the thing not resetting the codes, and the drain on the battery.

I now have a Diablo Tuner and am much happier with my truck overall and no more DoD. BTW Im selling my range device if anyone is interested.

    • I prefer new, but not without a deal. Historically I've bought severely aged new inventory, leftover model year, unpopular configuration kind of stuff that sits around on dealer lots until they just want it gone. $10k off MSRP kind of stuff on a mid-priced truck. That really, really helps knock down that first year depreciation. It also requires being somewhat flexible on colors and options. I wouldn't buy a 4 cylinder if I was looking for an 8 cylinder, but if I got blue paint instead of black, or a great deal was lacking a minor option, I'm willing to overlook those things for savings.   Used <> used. Condition and history are everything. If I'm buying used I'm looking for cream of the crop. The truck from the guy who religiously pampers it, and then decides a year later he wants newer and nicer. NOT the ex-rental vehicle, or the crew cab traded in by the family with 7 kids who like to throw food, and the oil only got changed when there was time long after the oil life monitor started alerting.
    • @Grumpy Bear the conclusion from your post about doubling engine life has me curious. Are we literally talking an expected life of 250,000 miles potentially becomes 500,000 miles with a step up in filtration for fresh oil at "the oil factory" when it's bottled? I know you said that's a single variable among many, but, that's significant if the implication extends that far into a real world use case. I would think the oil marketing folks would really eat that up and make it known.   Particles introduced during oil change is a fairly easy one to avoid, but probably not intuitive as one would think. I.e. using a clean funnel. But...what was it wiped with? Paper towel leaves behind little fibers. A solvent if not dried is not something one would want to introduce into their engine with clean oil. And, keeping the oil filler neck clean and free of buildup.. Look at some guys engine bays and they're an absolute mess. Some say that's better than the drawbacks of cleaning it. I'm not a buyer of that idea.   I've also wondered if "flooding" the top end of the engine with oil while filling is a bad idea. During normal lubrication the oil flows in a gutter back into the galleys. But if you flood the area you're potentially washing the top of the rockers, springs, and other areas which may not get much oil wash normally, and you're mixing all that into the new oil. I just don't have the patience to pour slowly. 😆
    • It was a bad pump, i had a dealer next day the pump. Gm part #86591535. Tools needed 10mm socket, pliers for hose clamps, 1/2gal of Dexcool. About 30mins to remove and install, pump located near oil filter on driver's side frame rail. I had a local mobile mechanic delete the code, he had a snap on scan tool. My scanner could not delete the code. I drove back home about 700 miles since then, and no check engine light. Hope this helps someone in the future in the same situation i was in. Thank you to all that helped me.
    • Hi Gary, I guess it all boils down to personal preference and what you can afford. I, personally, buy new because I will know from day one how the vehicle is maintained and driven.
