Plastidip durability

Seen some awesome stuff on here with folks self-applying Plastidip in various places. 2 quick items:

- How durable is it? Will it hold up to heavy pressure washing?

- IF one ever wanted to take it back off to factory chrome finish, is that doable?

TiA.

Yes and yes. If your power washing isn't peeling paint away, it shouldn't peel the plastidip away.

Awesome to hear it's that heavy duty! Your second "yes" means that you agree it can be taken off if desired. How would one go about doing that without ruining the original chrome finish?

It's real simple. When you first apply it put a good of amount of coats so it will be easy to peel. Depending oh how many coats you put you should be able to roll back a edge and just continue from there. To better understand this you can search YouTube on how to remove the Plastidip.

I love Plastidip! When I first tried it I was super skeptical, but after using it I am a believer. I initially did 3 coats on my bowties when I got my truck a couple years ago and it has held up great. I wash my truck by hand and use touch less car washes with no issue. I did have the tiniest of rock chip in the front one a few weeks ago and decided I was bored and was going to re-do them both. It was a pain to remove the Plastidip but only because I had such a thin layer on. It all came off cleanly it just took a lot of work. This time around I sprayed 6 layers and it's thicker, so shouldn't have that issue again (but also hopefully I don't have to redo it again for a very long time!). Looks great and beats paying $100+ to buy OEM black bowties from GM. If you overspray by accident it comes off easily by just rubbing your fingers on it, but I just took the time to properly tape it all off and didn't have an issue with overspray. Left nice clean lines.

Once you use Plastidip once you'll be thinking of other applications to use it on your truck :)

The "peel-ability", if that's a word, is what makes me nervous. It will be nice if & when the time ever comes to remove it, but it sure seems that would get blasted off with a pressure washer?

7 months, 22k miles in winter weather, many car washes both automatic and by hand with a foam lance and it has yet to chip or peel. I did 5+ layers on a hot summer day.

If you were to directly hold a pressure washer nozzle right at it for an extended period of time, ya, it may start to come off. But you'll be surprised at how durable it is. And when I had my "pain in the ass" moment because I didn't do very many layers, it did come off with a microfibre cloth and some elbow grease.

Well I guess you could say that's a pretty good endorsement. However, you also bring up a good point about waiting until warmer temps. Good news is none of those changes are urgent. Thx for the input.

You think black plasti dip would hold up on exhaust tips?

I probably wouldn't. I've seen some guys plastidip some items under the hood and said it was fine but something about putting "plastic" on something that gets very hot seems like a bad idea.

I painted my rims one color and hated it and it peeled right off. I used 4 layers and 2 clear layers. Put a new color on and have had it on for over 12,000 miles with no problems. The key is to not have any "edges" where it can start to peel. I turned the rim around and painted a quick coat on the back side "edges" to get the edge completely covered.
