Gasoline in the oil

My wife has 2012 Chevy Equinox 2.4L 4 Cylinder. The equinox was low on oil (seems to burn oil from day 1), as I was adding oil I noticed a gasoline smell from the oil and a white pasty residue on the oil fill cap. Is this an injector problem or the fuel pump? Other than that, seems to be running fine and not leaking any fluids. Thanks!

You have two issues. It probably has piston ring blow by causing the low oil/using oil issue. There is a bulletin extending the warranty for replacing the piston and piston ring asm. Your other issue seems to be the high pressure fuel pump located at the motor dumping too much fuel. There is a recall out for replacing the high pressure pump on alot of older equinox's. If you want, pm me your vin and I'll see if either of these items would be covered.

The white pasty residue is moisture and oil (emulsified oil).

 

It is common in all engines this time of year...my wife's Forester gets this every year. I think it collects there because that area is cooler and the moisture condenses out...

 

As for the other...I'll let others weigh in on that, but how old is the oil (when was the last oil change)...if it's been in there a while, even the oil in my 6.0l smells like fuel.

Good point, Steve. If the vehicle does a lot of idling, it is an ideal candidate for fuel/oil contamination, no matter what "premium" brand of oil and oil filter you run.

Oil was changed 4K miles ago (full synthetic). I have had to add oil for about 2 years but it never smelled like fuel. It does idle in the morning using the remote start but no longer than 20 min.

Short trips and long idle times will allow more fuel into the oil. Also if it isn't driven long to get up to temp for a long period of time it will not burn off the excess fuel in the oil. Especially during the cold months of the year when the engine takes longer to reach operating temperature.

Most direct injection engines will eat a bit of oil, nothing new there, so don't let it scare ya. Some have to add up to a quart every 2000-3000 miles. That's acceptable. At least according to the manufacturers. My brother's Audi takes almost 2 quarts every 5000 miles. (He does 6000-8000 mile oil changes)

It was blown piston rings which caused oil consumption and gasoline to get into the oil. All covered under warranty.... thank god. They said if it wasn't covered, it would have cost roughly $3500 [emoji51]
