Advice on "Demo" Model Price

Recommended Posts

Posted

My local Chevrolet dealership has a 2017 LT Z71 listed for $35,315.

I called the dealership today and I was informed that it was a "demo" model that the service department lent to people when their vehicles were being worked on. Since it has never been registered it is technically a new vehicle and is being sold as such. I was told it has about 4K miles on it.

The truck has the Z71 and All Star package with bucket seats. I like the features on the truck and it should fit my needs fairly well. MSRP is $48,815. I've seen similar trucks that aren't demo models with advertised prices $10,000 under sticker. Is the $13,500 that is discounted from the sticker a good price for this truck? Any issues I should look for on the truck? I'm going to view the truck tomorrow after work, any advice is much appreciated.

4x4? What other features? Test drive it extensively. Complain about everything and get them to give you new tires.

It is 4x4, heated seats, power seats, spray in bed liner, 5.3 v8, rear view camera, trailer brake controller, navigation, other than that I believe it is just the standard features that come with an LT.

If the tires a gone after 4,000 miles I think I would pass...

Definitely, the truck would be incredibly abused to have significant tread loss at 4,000 miles. Or at least I would think so. I stopped at the dealer last night after they were closed and the tires don't seem to be worn. Honestly, the tires aren't a major concern. I will be swapping the rims and tires from my 2002 Silverado with the ones on this truck as soon as I have a leveling kit for it.

If they are selling the truck as new, I want full tread life. 4K demo miles is different from 400 test drive miles. That's just me though. And you can get more for new tires if you sell them.

We bought the wife a dealer demo '15 Terrain last February with 4k on the clock. The great thing about them is you can use GM points and other incentives like you would on any other new vehicle purchase. I asked for a fresh oil change and tire rotation, test drove it for about a half hour to make sure everything felt right, went home with it. Because of the savings we could afford a higher optioned "new" vehicle, she loves the thing.

I realize many people shy aware from them, but not me. As long as you do your due diligence inspecting them before purchase, you can walk away with a helluva deal, we did.

Thanks for all of the input guys! I went to the dealer to test drive and there were a few minor issues. They were firm on price and I couldn't get them to come down. They ended up having an ALC truck on the lot with a 6" BDS lift and every single option I wanted. The truck was a GM buyback, it supposedly would randomly shutdown while driving, but the issue could not be replicated. After extensively test driving it and haggling with the dealer I ended up signing the paperwork on it today! Now I just have to wait for it to get back from the body shop, they are fixing some scratches and rock chips that were on the truck.

having gone through the process and what it takes to get GM to "brand" the vehicle as a buyback, I would definitely try to see all of the service records on the truck. I had numerous problems with my 2014 and they would not do the buyback because it would have to disclose all of the problems the previous owner had dealt with. they ended up going with the trade allowance on mine because it would diminish the value of the truck as bad.

Break-in is a lot more critical than most people think, especially in regard to ring seating and future oil use, etc. Do you really want something that you do not know the history of?

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
