Difference between HD and non HD

In previous model years, there were non-HD 2500s, and 1500HDs as well. 1500HDs and 2500s were about equal.

My Suburban 2500 is a non-HD 3/4-ton. It has full-floater axles, compared to the half-ton semifloaters, but not as high of a load rating as the HD trucks.

So basically 2500's are now called 2500 HD? You can't purchase a 2500 that isn't a HD model?

Correct. From '99-'02 (I think) GM made a 1500, 1500HD, 2500, and a 2500HD. The 1500HD and 2500 were basically beefed up 1500s with the 9.5" semi float axle if I remember right. Both had the 6.0L bolted to the 4L60e tranny and whichever transfer case had the automatic 4x4 option, and sitting on the 1/2 ton frame. But GM decided they no longer needed to make a beefed up 1500 or a less beefy 2500, whichever way you want to look at it, so they no longer offer a non-HD 2500.
