This is now 2017 so who knows if my problem is the same as the engine fire recall in 2014. I own a 2014 silverado LTZ. I've had Electrical problems for the past year to where the truck would shut off while I'm driving, lock the steering wheel and doors. Start it right back up and acted like nothing ever happened. That went on for about 6+ months and about 5 times. A few months after that I started getting a low oil light that would go off and on randomly. Weird considering I still had 60% life left on my dashboard and the dipstick was reading full. At that time I started noticing a burning smell when I would turn on my heat. It was the first time I turned my heat on all winter so I just thought it was nothing. Told the dealership anyways and they said they couldn't find anything wrong and didn't notice a burning smell so the truck was safe to drive. That happened about a month and half ago. NOW I was driving back from the beach with my wife and dog while I started get crazy movement in my battery voltage on my dash to the point that the truck entered battery saver mode. Drove for 4 more miles to be exact and the voltage popped back up to normal. At that moment we pulled into Dunkin Donuts to get coffee. Pulled up the the screen and noticed the burning smell again, but this time it was stronger. I shut off the heat which was at only 75 degrees. We pulled forward to the cashier and noticed white smoke coming out of my hood on the right side. I turned the ignition off. Told my wife to get out of the vehicle and told the cashier to grab a fire extinquisher. Went to open the hood and flames were coming from the right side of the engine near the engine block and air intake. Not just smoke, but actual fire. Put it out with the fire extinquisher and called the dealership to come get it.

Bet it gets fixed this time. Hope it's on GM's dime since it was noted before. Sounds like the alternator let go.

I'm glad my family is okay! I've been nervous to drive my truck for the past year, not for my life but for my family's. This is a family vehicle and regardless nobody should feel unsafe in this New of a vehicle. And the fact that GM both dealership and over the phone customer service did not care for the past year still has me on edge that not a thing will be done. I have no trust or faith in GM anymore. I'll go back to my old Chevys instead of buying this new crap

I am happy to hear that you and your family is save and no one was hurt and that you keep your head and dealt with the situation at hand in a expedited manner.

 

GM's head should raise up a little if the dealership pushes this up the chain, but may take a bit of help from you, your insurance company, and a lawyer.

 

This experience can be nerve wracking for sure, but don't let it keep you from stepping back into a new generation truck. Going back into an older model will have less electronics, but still has an electrical system and as they age, get more dangerous. Its a fact of any car or truck and even the houses we live in. Anything with electricity. So don't let this upset your trust in GM. Use this opportunity to get a newer truck and most importantly to be grateful for the fact that you and your family dodged a very bad situation that could have potentially been a lot worse.

After everyone was out, I would have walked away and let it burn to the ground. That would have been about the only way to get them to replace that truck. I was in a similar situation with a lemon truck. Sadly my will to fight was no more. I ended up selling the piece of garbage taking a loss. I'm back to driving our old family beater Chevy Impala. :/

Not going to lie, after all was said and done, the thought did cross my mind. I've always believed in doing the right thing and acting accordingly when you can. I've been more than patient and helpful with my truck problems over the year and all I ever asked for was for someone to be on the same page as myself. Wasn't asking for a lot, just what needed to be done. The effort that was put in by GM to fix the problem shows the conclusion. Just saying GM.

Glad no one was hurt. I own a '14 GMC Reg Cab Long Bed. So far I haven't smelled anything burning or seen any smoke.

 

Please let me know your build date and final assembly location.

 

My '14 was built in June, 2014 and final assembly was completed at Roanoke, IN.

 

Does the window sticker for your truck have a statement like the one below from my truck?

US/Canadian Parts Content: 40 percent

That was a guess on my part about the alternator but between insurance and GM you should be fine. Try to get some extended warrenity because of fire related problems or another truck. You're get there! We visit your area often and love it.

So Chevrolet called and verified that the alternator is what caused the fire. Not to sure on what all has been damaged yet or why it caught fire. The truck is still in the shop, when I hear more I'll update this thread.

The dealer said the battery cable that leads to the alternator is what caused the alternator to catch fire. It's also the suspect for all the electrical problems i was having with the truck shutting off on me and locking the steering wheel. We'll see.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
