3.42 Axle ratio at highway speeds

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am going to buy a 2017 GMC sierra with the 6.2 liter and 8 speed tranny.

The package I am putting together shows I have to get max trailer package to get other items I want.

I would very much like to know what the RPMs are cruising at highway speeds say 60 to 70 MPH.

I will do some light towing now and again but will mostly be city and highway miles.

Any info from someone having this set up would be appreciated.

Thanks

Occasional light towing and you need the 6.2L with Max Tow package? Seems like serious overkill. What's driving you to NHT? You need the higher gears?

2000k at 80mph. Maybe 1500-1600 at 60mph

Whats NHT? The dealer said for me to get the 6.2 liter I had to have the max tow package and I want the 6.2 liter.

Your dealer is full of shit. That's probably just what they have in stock. You can get All Terrain with 6.2 and that's not available with Max Tow, and I'm 99% sure you can get a regular SLE, SLT, or Denali with a 6.2 and max tow not required.

NHT is Max Tow. You don't need it to get 6.2L. NHT will give you taller gears and a stiffer suspension. Good if you need them, but I wouldn't recommend them for occasional light towing. Tell your salesman that you want to speak to somebody that knows more about the trucks.

Thanks very much for this, it is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I think he said I had to get the max tow package because I wanted the rear sliding power window.

Thanks a bunch, they had me seiously confused as I built it online and went in and he said the dealer "configurator" wouldnt allow them to choose the options that the GMC website let me choose. I had originally built it with the 6.2 liter and the 3.23 gears as I wanted my gearing a little on the "taller" side but he said they couldn't do it. I am going to be spending a lot of money and this and would really like to get the options I want.

The 6.2 is only available with a SLT or higher trim and a LTZ or higher trim package. However if you want a lower gear ( numerically higher) then a 3.23 then you have to get the NHT package which only comes with a 3.42. currently the 3.73 doesn't seem to be available with the 6.2. which is very goofy.

The "Build & Price" tool online really helps when learning about the MANY MANY configs:

http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado-1500-pickup-truck.html

Look at GMC.com too - Look at GMC and Chevy dealerships - find a knowledgeable salesman. Take your time - I spent 2 weeks before buying/ordering.

In my case, the folding rear window came with the LTZ plus package - but I am sure it could be ordered otherwise and come with many packages.

But I wanted the Max Tow for all it includes - and combined in a 6.2L short bed crew cab is going to be one sporty little truck with Max abilities empty or towing:

3.42 ratio 9.76" Eaton G80 Locker

Increased capacity springs

Better shocks

Better radiator

Power folding, chrome tow mirrors

Etc

Another thing to think about. If you are going to put larger tires on go max tow since larger tires will raise your gear ratio. Numericaly higher.

Was just reading a post on this forum about that very thing. I have it set up to do a 4.5 inch zone lift and was planning on going 33s on the stock 20 inch wheel. Just learning about the ratio and what bigger size tires do, sounds like I should atleast get the 3.42 gears and maybe max tow would help accomodate the lift and tires

What size cab are you wanting?

This happens to be exactly what I'm looking for, NHT 6.2 in a double cab 4x4. My dealership could only locate 1 in the area I'm in. That's just plain assinine in my opinion. In my way of thinking there should be more trucks with this configuration manufactured then any other. It's the most capable. Of course that's just me and I actually use my trucks for a truck and not to just support my Y chromesone.
