dyno tune driveshaft cannot handle 115+

I just wanted to let everyone know that if you are running the 3.73 gear that the driveshafts critical speed is around 115.It will I REAPEAT WILL start shaking and tear apart in the center at these speeds.I had one rip apart after a dyno tune and replaced the shaft with another factory one and it starts shaking around 115ish.These driveshafts are very thin walled and have cardboard in them that cant take the stress.

Technically it's critical frequency and not stress. Sounds crazy but if the material were actually thinner it would perform better with regard to high speed. It may then lose enough strength that it couldn't handle the torque, but it wouldn't become unstable due to speed.

Well according to what I was told if the walls were thicker the diameter could be smaller and that would raise critical speed.It has an amazing tune done by the same guys who do some of the street outlaw tuning and I make the payments so I will do with it how I choose.Regardless these driveshafts are garbage.I will be opting for a high performance aluminum piece very soon.And yes the critical speed of the shaft caused jump roping of the driveshaft and the stress at the work hardened area fails.

That's unbelievable that it's made that thin wrapped around cardboard.

 

I don't know anything about driveshaft construction, but is that normal theses days, do a lot of trucks use that kind of construction to make a driveshaft??

 

What about HD 2500 trucks, do they also have a thin layer wrapped around cardboard??

 

Just curious, I never would have thought it would be made like that, just crazy.

Remember when driveshafts were small diameter and steel? Those held up to high speeds...similar lengths and held big block torque and HP.

 

Has anyone had a custom shaft purpose built? Probably a stupid late question on this forum...

I keep seeing a 2 piece for around 900.00 but have spoke to some driveshaft specialists who make custom driveshaft's for around 700.00.Its a little troubling that a 420 h.p truck can do 97mph in 4cyl mode with 22mpg and I cant push it any further if a Ford, Toyota, or Dodge run up on me. Yup, they've used the aluminum driveshaft in the duramax since 01 in crew-cab short beds - Quite a few switch to a custom aluminum one for weight savings (I want too say the steel version weighs close to 40lbs or so).

 

They're also fairly strong, guys are running well over 1700ft lbs. with them; but those are 5inch diameter shafts.

I had mine made in San Antonio. I had seen videos of them coming apart on dynos and some places around here wont put a 14+ GM truck on a dyno with stock shaft.

 

Mine is heavier than stock and its 5" in diameter, the wall is much thicker and rated at 175mph with 3.73's. Not that I will ever go that fast in my truck but at least I know it wont come apart on me.

 

My 2011 dmax 3500 has a steel driveshaft.

Real good feeling cruising down the interstate at 80mph knowing that another 30 to 35mph she my grenade. Ah living on the edge. And yes I know there governed not to run that fast but still.
