dyno tune driveshaft cannot handle 115+

I fly jet aircraft and have fairly in-depth knowledge of all the PFM (Pure F'ing Magic) that makes them work but this is blowing my mind. Thing looks as thick as an oil filter. Can you take a measurement and see how thick those sidewalls are as well as what grade of material is used?

I'm also guessing that this is much more efficient given the lower weight=less rotational mass???

I saw a post on one of the forums where one came apart under the governed speed limiter. There may have been other issues with truck to cause it but the post there was no indication it was going to fail. Granted I think the speed was around 90mph, but still under the limiter.

I've had my 3.42 geared truck to a 135 a few times. I don't see myself going much faster than that, it wasn't the fear of my drive shaft breaking holding me back though, lol.

They all have it, many other manufacturers have something the same or similar.

At that diameter, the torsional rigidity is probably greater than a 3in with over double the wall thickness. Its also lighter which does help with efficiency and drivetrain loss. It is also designed to a cost point, which helps no one.

I keep seeing a 2 piece for around 900.00 but have spoke to some driveshaft specialists who make custom driveshaft's for around 700.00.Its a little troubling that a 420 h.p truck can do 97mph in 4cyl mode with 22mpg and I cant push it any further if a Ford, Toyota, or Dodge run up on me. Guess its a ego thing. I have talked to these people and this is were I am probably getting mine. http://www.driveshaftspecialist.com/Truckhtml/Chevy-GMC.html

I understand you wanting a stronger driveshaft for racing on a track, but what would you do if another manufacturer's vehicle "came up on you" at 97 mph?

Is there any indication that it's going to break before it breaks? Seems like it would violently shake or something before, hopefully giving enough time for the driver to slam on the brakes.

This answers the why is there a speed limiter question .... It's common to have to replace the driveshafts when you modify.

Lots of options for performance custom shafts though..

I have a highly modified 92 Chevy P/U, it's street driven rarely run to its potential. It's been over 100 MPH a few times in 25 years. It's has its stock drive shaft, I'm under the old truck often checking stuff. It's a shame driveshaft technology has gone backwards.

Get out of the way?

Not trying to do the "who has the is bigger one" thing.

No one will have a bigger one when they get cut off for being stupid :)

Good info! I just put a note on the dash as a reminder to keep it under 110 mph.
