If I was getting a mail-order tune yes I know that's how it would work. But I'm wondering if the shop will have to pay with their vcm and then try to charge me extra. I'm going to call today to find out and also see if they got my headers in I can't wait to get it all done.

I would definitely check with them. I know Klug Performance what he charges is with the cost of the credits he would need to tune is included in the price. If they use there VCM they will have to use 8 credits to licence your PCM and TCM to be able to upload tune files to your PCM and TCM. Once you licence your vehicle that is only for that individual VCM.

Yes that's what I figured and I don't see how they could really charge extra for doing what is part of the tune. I was kind of hoping they could unlock it and then I would save my credits but I think you're right it's license to each vcm.

Now if you want to scan or log someones vehicle with your VCM suite to check engine codes and stuff like that you can without licencing there vehicle. It only asks you to licence there vehicle if you try to upload a tune file.

Chuck, how are you tuning these? People need transparency on what they are doing to their vehicles.

YES. :) I'll be about as transparent as HPT or anyone else that has discovered how to make Cars and Trucks

go fast. If you want a 2017 Truck (and trans) Tuned, I can do it with EFI LIVE.

Not to be a dick or anything, but I would not expect HPT to tell you what they are doing..... They are DOING IT.

I'm aware of 3 people (myself included) who are tuning 2017 CORVETTE, GAS TRUCKS, and (tomorrow) a 2017 DURAMAX A1000

trans..... None of us have any idea of what the others are doing.... But we're all doing it.

However we do it, it's a service we offer and whatever gets the job done for the end user is good in my book.

Like anything else, before long...... technique will float to the top....

Just be happy it's available for you if you want it.

Good to know. Glad to see more people people and programs able to acess the T87A's I want my truck done now and want to be able to have full acess myself so HPT is my only option.

Thanks for the input Chuck.

Hpt is making hardware modifications, that is transparent. We pretty much know what everybody else is doing.

You said you are tuning with efi live when we have a quote from efi live in this very thread saying it can't be done.

Your big secret is safe without the how, just need the what.

A chef has no problem disclosing the ingredients, just not the recipe.

Great example !! We don't need the recipe just the ingredients !!

People would feel a lot more at ease knowing if you are doing a hardware mod or if you are using software only. And a brief explanation regarding why efi live specifically stated that it isn't possible with their software in an earlier quote.

No ones bashing or anything just very curious and a little hesitant to cough up cash for something without a little info.

Well i can tell you one thing I just got my TCM back from HP tuners and I looked at the screws with a magnifying glass I can tell you they did not open it up.

EFI Live software will not even let you access a T87A controller it tells you that it is not supported so my guess is somehow that they're tricking EFI live into believing it's a T87 instead and somehow bypassing the security themselves to get into the controller.

Are you certain you got back the exact TCM that you sent in?

The T87A can't be tricked. The T87 is a 3MB computer, the T87A is 4MB. They use different processors as well.

That may be something else because I did notice some scuff marks that were on my TCM that were not there before I should have recorded the serial number off of it

I had a 2016 Charger and sent HP Tuners my PCM to have it unlocked and I recorded the numbers and they did send me back my original PCM.

Good to know. I had a feeling they just scuffed it up handling it.

This is turning out to be a very informative thread. I just wish we could figure out how people are tuning T87A's with EFI Live.

    • The amount of storage in the rear seat area is huge. You can keep all your cycle gear dry and clean back there
    • Truck in fluid changes and investigate subtle shudder at cruising speeds.  Told them it felt like my ‘14’s shudder when AFM kicked in.   Dealer #1 :  You need a new torque converter.   6 weeks later, after causing other damages to my truck, I get the truck back.  Same shudder exists. New, more violent shifts and vibrations at low speed.  After choice words and a few more weeks of waiting for them to replace my running boards supports, I move on to another Dealer.   Dealer #2:  The cruising speed shudder is DFM.  (I didn’t realize truck had it.) The TCM/ECM needs updates.  Updates will solve all vibration issues.   They perform updates, truck seemed ok in lot.  Not a mile down the road, SERVICE BRAKE PAD MONITOR. Dealer #1 stated brakes were at 4mm.   took truck back to Dealer #2, rear brakes at 2mm and less than 1mm.     New pads/rotors on rear, new pads up front.   truck seems good. Toggle through menus, brake monitor system is disabled.  Huh?  Why? Turn that sucker on : SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM!     will not reset manually, automatically, or even after pulling negative bat cable for 30min.     Could the TCM/ECM updates the culprit?    A torque converter diagnosis for a “normal” shudder and now I’m thousands in the hole and the truck still isn’t right!  Beyond pissed.
    • Your right on. 👍🏻
    • Seats matter a lot.  I would start there - good advise here.  I had a 2018 LT Colorado before my 2026 LT Silverado, and the seats are so much better in the new one it's not even a contest.  That was one thing I always hated about the Colorado and I owned two of them spanning 10 years - but I did it so I could park in the garage mainly.  Now I have a much larger property and a huge barn so I have plenty of parking options and a full size is more useful for maintaining the property and current hobbies as well.  I wasn't evenb thinking about the seats as part of the reason for the move to the Silverado, but after two back to back 700mile road trips I am sold on the LT seats w/ leather 100%.  The other LT features are also nice - one thing I really like is the power rear window on the back window by the bed.  And the lighting in the bed is also very nice to have - I doubt that comes on the lower models.  Power tailgate - also quite useful - it's a heavy slug!  What else - I could take or leave the screen - but heated seats and steering wheel and cruise control on the steering wheel is very useable - I would never want to live without that.  Even the colorados had that.
    • I think the ship has sailed on the fuel injection type - everything is getting direct now.  Does it help with mpg?  Not really and nobody buying a HD truck really cares anyway.  But that is what it is at this point.  Piston rings is something they may well adjust over time to get them right.
