Please explain what a zero is and how to find it.

 

I gather it is some kind of 'stamp' or imprint on the rubber boot of the numeral '0' alerting you not to overgrease. Just a guess going from what you wrote cfell.

There is no "stamp" on the seal/boot because they are usually considered part of the item they are mounted to...like a ball joint. Not knowing what your vehicle has, I would caution to pump just enough grease to feel the boot barely expand. You will have moved fresh grease into the assembly. I have overfilled and ruptured or pop the spring seal retainer.

Word to the wise, if you have water in the joint, you will never expel it if you don't get grease out past the boot. More than once I have pumped beads of water out of my ball joints, even rusted and destroyed a set in the AAM in my previous Dodge using "premium" grease. I use a waterproof grease now, pump beads of water out from time to time. The "premium" grease pumped out of the joint rusty...that's how I knew I had an issue. FYI, my truck never sees offroad...and I still get water.

 

You do also realize the joint and boot are separate components and there is no other "seal" in the joint? It's a steel ball stud, a plastic cup, retainer, a crimp to hols all that together, and slip on boot. Bought and installed a lot of ball joints over the years...cut a good many apart.
