Coolant Hoses

What's the change out period for coolant hoses? I'm at five years and 100k miles...I don't thing the manual has a change/replace interval, only an inspect.

Personally I'd consider replacing them now, if it's time for coolant change. If not time for coolant change, then the next opportunity. The rubber used nowadays fails from the inside out. You won't see or usually detect failure visually

They're more of a time item and less of a mileage item. My truck is a 2001 with the original hoses, 115,000 miles. I just did a flush and didn't replace any, they all still look brand new. I'd inspect them and see what you think

Yeah, see I'm in the unlucky boat here...I had a rad hose pop on one truck at about 125k, and my father goes on to drive the same year and practically model truck to 300k on original hoses and water pump...I changed the water pump twice! Sounds like a good thing to do this spring before camper towing season happens...I assume Delco hoses?

What is everyone's thought on the fuel pump? That's really the only other thing I see that could leave you stranded for days getting it replaced. Is there a mileage/time one should think about that if you don't want to just drive until it fails?

I've heard once you reach 140,000, any more mileage you get out of your pump is bonus. But I'm not sure if that's true. I changed mine at around 112,000 because we thought it was causing problems. (Ended up being the crank sensor, not the pump) but, I upgraded to I guess it was the 03-07 style pump, and my fuel mileage jumped from around 12 to 13.5 so it was worth it. Plus the new style sending unit won't fail like the 99-02 models, so your gas gauge will work right

The AC Delco pump was $155, its super easy to put in as long as you can get 4 people to help you lift the bed off

If you're just changing the pump, you don't actually have to take the bed all the way off, you can just tilt it to the side. If your pump is looked rusty or corroded it can't hurt to change it. Planning on doing mine soon.

It's worth it to at least periodically check that the fuel pressure is correct at the engine (55-60 psi both at idle and at higher speed, shouldn't dip for long when engine is revved). Low pressure means the fuel pump is going (for '03 and earlier, could also be the fuel pressure regulator on the driver's side fuel rail). Low FP screws up the engine computer, because it doesn't inject the fuel it wants to, and it tries to do whatever it can to get more fuel in, and less air in.

Also worth it to make sure all the exhaust bolts are still there (they have a tendency to break off, and if enough of them do, clean air gets into the exhaust, screws up the O2 sensor readings, also screwing up the engine computer).

I've seen that done, but seems to me that it would be about the same amount of work to prop that up safely than it would to just take it off. When it's off you don't have to bend underneath it and you don't risk it smashing your head

My 93 had the originals on it when I sold it. 240k miles. 1 water pump but I serviced the cooling system every 30k.

I started checking them regularly and they never scared me.

Told the guy I sold it to about it and he was in disbelief.

1 fuel pump at 130k. :happysad:
