USB 5V power - Permanent Dash Cam Wiring

Ok, i picked up a dash cam that runs on 5V DC. It came with a cigarette lighter adapter and a USB cable. My truck has a center console and is loaded with USB's. Trying to see about tapping the USB 5V power the truck already has in stead of wiring in something aftermarket. I've found the common thing is a 12V in, 5V out box about the size of box of matches. They're cheap, but if I can get the 5V from the factory source, even better. Anyone pulled this off this yet?

I bought a direct wire adapter on amazon and that's been working well for me. It's basically the cigarette adapter, but with wires to connect instead. I used an add a fuse and hid it all in my fuse box on the driver side. Fits perfectly and doesn't obstruct anything.

 

I don't think I'd chance messing with the USB from the radio. That seems like asking for trouble.

good point. I'll get the $6 12V to 5V adapter for $6 and run it on my add-a-fuse which is currently running the V1. By chance, which fuse are use running power off of?

I'm running mine off of the RAP fuse in the drivers side. I don't remember off the top of my head which one. Looking at the manual, I'd guess it was fuse 2 at the top. I'll have to take a look and get back to you. It was a standard micro fuse though. Nothing unusual.

 

Reason I wanted that fuse was I wanted my cam to keep recording after I shut down for a few seconds while I get out of the truck. It works perfectly.

Got mine wired up this weekend. Had no idea they made these 12V to mini USB setups. Thanks for the reply! I'm running both my V1 and Dash Cam from the RAP fuse, using a add-a-fuse. I have a 2A fuse for the cam/V1.

If you're running out of room in the fuse box, wire tap that V1 to the rearview mirror.

V1 was already wire tapped.... Got them both on the same tap.

Ok, so it's been a year since this one was active, but does anyone have a diagram as to where to tie in for my dash cam and the HomeLink console?
