anyone tow with the 3.08 gears?

Planning on pulling about 2500 lbs about 450 miles. I know the truck is rated to do so but if you've seen some of my posts on here you know that I hate the 3.08 gears. before I did so though just wondering if anyone on here tows with a truck similar to mine that has the 3.08 gear ratio and has some avg mpg numbers they would share. I assume I'm going to have to lock out 5 and 6 for the trip. truck is a 2010 sierra crew 5.3 afm disabled, will not be running a tune as superchips wants 91 octane for their tow tune and the other tunes are not rated for towing.

A guess--- 12-13 mpg.

When I owned a new 11 1500 Z/71 with the 5.3 & 3.08s I averaged 11-12 pulling a tandem axle trailer loaded with a 72 Chevelle, this was highway driving from Tex. back to Mich. running around 60-65 mph It seemed to struggle a few times in a headwind & slight hills in tow haul mode. Now with my HD & 4:10s that's a whole other story...I think you will be fine with 2,500 lbs out back.

2500 lbs? you could pull that with a big car or small suv. I wouldn't worry too much.

 

Your mpg is going to depend heavily on what shape your trailer/load is (wind drag) and how fast you are going. If you think you need to do 70+, be prepared to stop often for gas. But if you can drive at 60-65 and reduce the drag of your load (remove ramps, keep it low, etc) it won't be that bad.

My 2011 5.3 Silverado AFM tuned out and 93 octane gets 11.5 towing 3500 lbs of ATVs with 3.08 gearing

The biggest factor is the profile of the trailer. Is it a 2500-lb travel trailer that's a brick, or is it a flatbed trailer with 2500 lbs of bricks/cement? That answer will have a huge impact on your mileage and how it pulls.

thanks for the replies, looks like ill be looking at around 11-12 then. the trailer would be about an 8 ft utility trailer with the drop down gate. also looking into renting a uhaul utility trailer, that way I only have to pull the trailer one way.
