Running board help!

Hey guys,

Got my ICI Magnum RT running boards in the mail today and went to install them and they won't snug up to the truck because of the molded mud flaps on the front. I took one of the moldings off to see what was under there (that was a mistake) and it looks like crap without them. I have a 2017 Silverado 1500, the parts from ICI seem to be the right model for the truck. Not sure what to do here, modify the molding? Or just snug them up as much as possible? I really want the gap to be as small as possible between the boards and the truck. Here's some pics, you can't see the gap that great, but there is still a pretty big gap between the boards and the side of the truck. Any help is much appreciated.

I would say take the mouldings off and then put the steps on where you want them. And then after they are mounted I would try to modify and reinstall the trim pieces. Generally an easier route than trying to clearance as you go. Will alow you to do the least amount of trimming necessary. Good luck

Yea, that's kinda what I was thinking too. Have you pulled them off before, I unscrewed them and popped off one of the mouldings, but couldn't get it back on the tabs. Do you know if you have to pull out those white tabs and push them back in with the moulding? I couldn't get the moulding to go back over those damn tabs, was about to rip my little bit of hair out lol.

I haven't removed them from our particular trucks. Just many years of modding experience in the past. I would say google a picture of them if you can to figure it out. See whats attached where. But in general they are engineered to be installed easily, not removed easily. Gotta love engineers. lol

I can't remember exactly how the running boards attach, but could washers be used to shim the downwards, maybe would need to find longer bolts if you used a lot of washers but still better than it rubbing or cutting the trim

The hardware is long enough to hang them as is and i think it would be fine as far as functionality goes. It is really just the aesthetic part of it that I don't like, they hang too low and you can see the brackets, looks tacky. I think I'm gonna have to fold and have my trusty truck shop down the road deal with it.

I would phone the manufacturer of the running boards because they don't fit. If some cutting is required it should be mentioned on your instructions. I personally would trim the running board to fit the truck rather than the truck to fit the board if cutting was my only choice.

Sent pics to the retailer and he's forwarding along to the manufacturer, so we'll see where that gets me. Thanks for the reply, this "easy" mod has turned into a pain in the arse.

Double checked that lol, there's an indentation that goes towards the front on the boards so it's definitely going the proper direction.

That's a good idea, I went back through that thread quite a ways and have seen some on older silverados but none on a 2017, maybe I'll just make a quick post and see if anyone else had a similar issue. The manufacturer got back to me and said they do sit a little lower on the Silverado so to either remove the moulding (looks like crap underneath so that's not an option) or to modify it. So looks like I'll be modifying the moulding most likely.

I would just slice off a piece of that moulding to allow the steps to sit higher.

Based on the pictures you have submitted the running boards do not fit your truck. I agree that this style is meant to fit close to the truck. The piece of molding is part of your truck and the manufacturer suggesting you cut or remove this part proves that their product is not designed to fit your truck. If they cannot provide you with a proper fit, then I would return them!
