4L60E temp gauge add

Looking for advice or direction on how to add a temperature sending unit to my 2005 4L60E. Did a cluster swap with one that has tranny temp gauge and would like to get it functional. Don't want to add a pillar gauge. If it can't be done, I'll live with it. Thanks in advance.

Change the stepper motor.

iirc, back in the day when this was a popular mod to do to the GMT800, I know some people had issues that, I believe, were only cleared up by some programming being done to the cluster. You might search the site for the threads.

 

I just remember some people had plug-n-play, others were at the dealer.

 

Did a little quick look. There was a debate whether it needed to be programmed or if a faulty install of the stepper motor had occured

On another site I found where several people posted 05-06 were not PNP. Even some late 04s were not. I'd check with one of the reputable cluster rebuilders

I ordered a cluster from Dorman for an HD2500/3500 that had the tranny temp gauge and swapped it into my 2004 1500. Tranny gauge worked just fine. Truly plug and play. You could hook a scanner up to the OBD port and see if you're getting a good tranny temp reading.

1/2 ton clusters will need to be programmed.

 

The dealer will not be able to do this kind of programming as the coding for the trans temp is not part of the firmware find a good speedometer shop and they can.
