A/C on it's way out

Well today I noticed that the A/C seemed a bit weak. After a 2hr commute home through Tampa traffic, it's on its way out. Took forever to cool off, it did OK after 30 minutes but was struggling to keep up. Truck is 3yrs and 15 days old to the day. 69,XXX miles. That's an early failure in my book. I did add the AC bracket around 36k that GM recommends as a fixer. Dumb question, but any chance to get warranty coverage on this being there is a tech bulletin issued to address this issue?

i would definitely try it. I had two condensers replaced on my 14 model, but had the extended warranty. Hope I don't have the same problem with my 17 model.

Yea, won't be covetable under warranty. Best chance you have is the dealer eating the repair. Unless they try to goodwill the repair. On my 16, my a/c lines are good and no condenser issues yet. I'm at 21K

Some have had luck getting GM to cover the repair, or pay a portion of the repair. Im at 59K and have been monitoring my system closely expecting a condensor leak too. Good luck.

I had the condensor done under warranty on my '15. They had 8 online ahead of me at the dealer. Condensor was on backorder. If I were out of pocket I would be buying aftermarket with a lifetime warranty which I saw offered by a place in south Florida. Its a known issue at the dealer I assume there is a TSB. One option for you while you are waiting is to charge it up, I got almost a month out of that before it went warm again.

When mine went out it was noticeable by looking through the grill at the condenser on the drivers side. You can see the expansion tank is held to the condenser by two points that are braised. The upper braise point was where it was leaking and you could see where oil had made tracks on the condenser running down. I was able to add Freon and it would only last about two days before I had to add again. My dealer told me they had received 9 aftermarket condenser the Friday before I got there on Monday and only had 3 left.

 

I bought the truck with the extended warranty until 100k miles. I still have another 12k to go.

Update. It was the condenser, surprise surprise. GM worked with me on the price being I'm the OG owner and it broke 3 weeks after 3yrs. New condenser, back in business.

I find if your a gentlemen and state your reasonable case nicely, it usually has good results. I mean its a known defect in their product that you paid good money for, and you just went out of warranty. Good to hear common sense and decency came into play. Good luck.

 

On a side note, I just traded into a 2017 from a 2015. Exact same truck. They completey redesigned the A/C lines. I don't know about the condenser?

I agree seamus2154. Be reasonable. no more 1st year trucks for me.... i need to buy last year models. Get the discount because the new models are on the lot and forgo all the headaches. win win.

Yes Sir! I have always found first year anything with GM is no good. One exception, the 2006 Zo6! But technically that was a second year car first year motor! LOL

 

Alot of very good deals on 2017's right now. I bought the 2014 also as it sucked me in as such a big leap and improvement over the previous trucks. Then they had some great offer which I didnt get hurt getting out of it into a 2015.

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
