Need some advice (What truck should I buy)

Hello from faaaar far away , more specifically from germany. :) I am looking for a truck. I don't need it immediatly, but I would like to gather some advice. And since I haven't found a general buyer's advice group I have to open two threads. one in the gmt 400 forum and one in the gmt 800.

So now : what am I looking for ?  I need a truck which is:  reliable , able to tow at least like 8000Ib (3/4 or 1 Ton ) My price range would be  5000-6000 Dollars. ( because of shipping and stuff ). , I would like to have 4wheel abs , It should't be total gas hog ( in Europe we have LPG (Liquid Pressurized Gas), and this stuff is quite cheap 0,60 cents per litre (2,20$ per gallon) )  So I am aware of the fuel economy of v8's , but as always , the better mpg, the more money I have left :D 4x4 is a must have, single rear wheel, long bed, no crew cab.

I am looking forward for some helpful advice :)

Reliable is tough.

You never know with used at at that price and the miles on it IMO.

Here's an example:

https://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/d/2008-gmc-sierra-2500hd-ext/6354582497.html

This is HIGH mileage.

You can figure 12 to 15 thousand miles per year as an average. 10 year old truck, 150 thousand miles.

More trucks:

Yeah I know, that's what I feared. I mean i can do almost all of the work by myself, so this shouldn't be an issue. Nevertheless whenever I would buy such a high miler, I want a service history. As long as it was maintained properly, it could be a better option than a 100.000 mile truck thats never been maintained. That is the reason why I have opened two threads.

Realisticly I think I will get either a gmt400 or gmt 800 truck.  Everything more expensive will kill me on import taxes .:D

Next question, since you have just sended me cars from dealers : who is more trustalbe ? dealer or individual? ( know this depends on the person but what kind of experience do you had in the past )

Thank you for your help :)

You need to find one with low miles that was owned by an old man on a farm, who never modified it at all. Any modifications will indicate possible problems down the road.

I know that's not easy to find. I don't know how to find it either. But the internet is your friend. If you are serious about this, I would start looking on craigslist for big cities in the south: around Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, etc. Those areas should have less rust since they don't get salted roads in winter.

If you are interested in shipping it, you can buy from anyone, anywhere. Dealers should be more trustworthy, but not always on used cars, and since you don't live near them they don't have to help you out. Buying from a private party will probably give you a better deal, unfortunately the search is the hard part.

Thanks, the 2002 HD and the white regular cab is nice :)  I would never buy a modified truck since you never know how the truck was treatend and how well the modification is. besides that, it would be impossible to register it in germany since our registration process is hidiously complicated ( you need documents for every modification you make on the car and it must have a cetrificate that says: "this modification is allowed on that car" and you need a document about the quality of the material... so no thanks ... I will never buy a modded truck. Funny thing is, that I must modifiy some things, like the tail light. Because the german law says you cannot have red blinkers, and they have to be seperated. (because the people could be confused) ... :D Germany :D

Currently I am looking around los angeles, because there is the shipping company... and as I said, I have a limited budget... which leaves me with another problem..  is it cheaper to fly to the states, buy the car and drive it to the shipping company... or is it cheaper to pay somebody to buy the truck and ship it ... these are the next things i have to figure out. since i have no relatives in the us :(

Problems Problems problems... glad i have quite a lot of time to do this.

As always, thanks for yout reply :)

We tow a 8000 pound 5th wheel with our 04 Silverado 2500 Hd, 6.0 gasser, 4.10 gears.

It does the job really well. If it was stolen we would get another one just like it.

About shipping, generally everything you can do yourself will save you money.

Labor is the most expensive part.

Best of luck with this...

Just an FYI re towing capacity, we tow our gooseneck horse trailer with a 2003 2500HD 6.0 4.10 rear and the weight is in the 11,000 plus range.  Know others doing the same. Only additions are airbags in the rear, an additional trans cooler, and an additional fan (electric) to use on hot days.   In the flat lands and rolling hills it does great.  Steep hills slow things a bit.  This is in VA and NC where we have both.  Good Luck with your hunt.

    • I would be surprised if the diff's were not filled (with the cheapest gear lube) at the axle factory before being shipped to GM.  If you ever watched them building trucks they install the axles and all suspension parts with the frame upside down and then turn it over before its time to install the engine.     Too much gear lube in a axle can be worse than not enough especially with a lower quality GL where is get whipped up with entrained air (foam)  weakening its ability to lubricate.
    • This is the 6.6 gasser section of the forum, you should either delete or modify your previous post as it is misleading for anyone looking for factual information on their 6.6 gas engine.
    • Well....I've done my first intake gasket. Probably wrong, but...we'll see?   Ultra black on the china walls and 1/4" up onto the sides of the intake gaskets. Permatex High Tack (couldn't find Gaskachinch) on the head side of the intake gasket. I read wrong and it says you're supposed to put it on the mating surface of the head, not the gasket. Hoping it's like a PB&J sandwich where it doesn't matter what side the PB goes on so long as there's jelly. That crap is messy/sticky and I got a dab or two on the intake port openings, tried to wipe it off. Hopefully it won't be a big deal and will only aid in sealing.   Per instructions I left the intake (top side) of the gasket dry except for a light smear of RTV around the coolant ports. Wiggling the intake in there was a bear but I had help to free me of surrounding wiring/stuff but I was basically able to set it straight down lined up with the bolt holes.   I did not think to wait until the RTV skinned over but there probably was 5-10 minutes while it sat before installing the intake.   Bolts finger tight first. Then, followed the Chilton's manual pattern to snug them to 15 lb-ft.   Waited a little over an hour, and then did the final torque in sequence again to 35 lb-ft.   Yesterday I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and got my new "nut and bolt kit" (fuel lines) installed. Damn GM used security torx on the spider, which I don't have, so I got scammed at the local HW store for an off-brand security Torx bit set.   The new driver's door mirror arrived yesterday, so, there's a chance this thing could be running and road legal tomorrow? I don't want to get my hopes up.   This will be my first time stabbing a distributor, too. Although, lucky me, someone else marked the old distributor for removal previously, I did see that. (Someone's been here before!!). Engine is still at TDC so it *should* be just a matter of transferring the mark to the new dizzy and rotating it into place.
    • He has his dad’s newer truck he’s put away. He has several old cars he rotates between him and his family. I’ve seen a restored square body and a SS Chevy truck he’s sometimes drives. He did raffle off a new suburban recently. As much as he is watched if he drove new stuff as a rule we’d know it. It would be fine by me. I don’t care what people prefer. I got one more new one in me. I’d rather my wife get one. I can’t get her out of the Genesis. Don’t tell anyone. I want her to get an electric truck. I want to put a generator in the back. Just because. She hasn’t bit yet.
    • Yes, you must have seen my thread on the Blazer. HOT GARBAGE, but I love them anyway. I'm convinced every car guy has a soft sport for an S/T series somewheres. Probably even a Panther too, if I'm being an honest car guy. That doesn't mean they aren't junk. And they definitely don't get better with age. I sometimes play with old cars, but that's by choice. I don't rely on them and they aren't my everyday fleet.   Derek plays the common man on Youtube and that's no doubt where he started. Now he has Youtube money (and Motortrend, etc). You think his crews and his wife ride around in old beaters when they're chasing him and his wrecks across the country? No he's got newer and nicer stuff for that, you'll see glimpses of it in the footage.
