Finally got to use 4wd

We got a little over 5 inches of snow yesterday. Took the truck out today to go to the store to pick up a few essentials. Roads were really iced over in town but snowy in my neighborhood. Stayed in 4wd the whole way driving, system sounded quieter than what I thought it would be. Pretty impressed. Was fun to run around a bit in the snow and ice.

We got some snow too and i used 4wd for the first time and I couldn’t tell I was in 4hi until I made a sharp turn in the grass. 

 

I did play with auto as well. I went from auto to 4hi before I turned the truck off in Park. When I went back out to leave the truck acted like it was tied to something keeping it from moving then all of a sudden there was a loud bang and the truck began to move. I assume it was the front differential catching. I hope I didn’t mess anything up. It rode fine after the bang.

 

I thought we could activate 4hi and auto moving or stopped?

Took mine out in a good ole nor’easter for the first time today. We got about a foot so far and it’s still snowing.

I also played around with 4auto and 4h. I cruised some non plowed streets through about 6 to 8 inches of snow. I was passing some struggling cars up some pretty steep hills too! I was very happy with the performance. The duratrac tires were impressive in the snow!

I have had the same thing happen when my tires were frozen to the pavement.

For some reason I thought I have read that you need to put the truck back into 2wd before turning it off, this may not be true, but is what I did with my truck. I used the Auto mode later in the night when most of the snow had melted from the streets. And as stated by Pythonman, tires will freeze to the ground or really the ice/snow around them. 

 

This was the first time actually using 4wd other than the 50 feet I drove in it when I bought the truck in Oct '16.

I know this very well after living in both of the Dakotas for 7 years in the Air Force. I drove a 2wd truck the whole time and knew that if I couldn't get stopped there was no use in getting going in the first place. Seems like this is a big point everyone forgets!

Just remember to throw it in "neutral" if you find yourself sliding to a stop. Also, 4 auto is usually the best option for light snow (5 to 6 inches).

I left mine in 4hi with no problems. I parked in the grass. 

 

I need to go back thru the manual because that bang was loud and could be felt.

I was at Ellsworth from '00 to '04 and Minot from '09 to '12 when I retired.

If you have a 14 or 15 model truck and have not got the recall for the 4wd system done then you may find the truck will not come out of 4wd if you turn the truck off with 4hi engaged.  It never happened to my truck before the recall was put out but it did happen to others.  I try to put mine back in 2wd if I remember just to be safe even though I have had the recall done.

sorry, but this topic just made me chuckle. I hope you all had fun in your first snow storm, haha.

 

For us, today is the first day in 15 days we had a temp above 25. We missed a local record by 1 day, of having 15 consecutive days with a low temp below 0. Some of the days, the high was also below 0.

(for any of you Canadians reading this, the temps listed are F)

 

I love when my truck tells me ice is possible. My entire gravel driveway is covered by a layer of ice.....

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
