Trading my 15 5.3 for 18 6.2

Unfortunately........physics has everything to do with it.

The 5.3 and the 6.2 are identical in design. If you take and remove the engines from their trucks and put them on dynos, the 6.2 WILL ABSOLUTELY USE MORE FUEL. All things being equal, you cannot make more HP without using more fuel. It is impossible.

You can alter designs, get efficiency gains, etc and that all helps but thats not what we're discussing here. We're comparing 2 almost identical engines.

Now, put them back in their trucks - lets say CCSB 4x$ and load them up with like 7k lbs on a trailer. The 6.2 will out tow the 5.3. Again because physics. At cruise, the 6.2 might actually use less fuel when loaded because it isnt laboring as hard as the 5.3 might be. It wont be much of difference. The engineers tune all aspects of these 1/2 tons to be most efficient unloaded at highway speeds.

 

TXGREEK - youre whole "there is no replacement for displacement" and "God Bless Murica" statements say pretty much what everyone needs to know about you. Im actually surprised youre buying vehicles with fuel injection. But I digress. My issues isnt with your opinions. My issue is with you spreading false information. If your 5.3 was getting 11mpg then you had a modded truck with heavy tires or your engine was ****ed. Simple as that.

If I may interrupt, the trim on this LTZ Z71 is very cheap looking.  Not only is it not chrome, which is fine, its all rubber. Overall this Redline edition and apparently all Z71's look cheap now.  My LTZ Z71 Redline edition looks kinda like an LTZ Z71 work truck edition.

The 6.2 and 5.3 are NOT identical besides displacement.   The 6.2 has higher compression, different heads, intake throttle body etc.   Hence why gm recommends/requires premium in the 6.2 and not the 5.3 and why the 6.2 will give you all the gravy and the 5.3 wont.

Nope, 10-11mpgis about right for these trucks is real city traffic/dense suburbia. I’m getting about 9-10mpg right now in the winter.

 

if you’re getting 17-18mpg, there is no way your definition of “city” is similar. Nobody on this earth is getting 17-18mpg in a 2014+ Gm 1/2 ton truck in actual city traffic. (City = Coming to a stop every 1/4-1/2 mile or so)

 

to quote you, physics says 5500lbs can not come to a stop and then accelerate every 60 seconds and get 17mpg in a modern gasoline ICE engine without being a hybrid.

Well they are nearly identical by design and function. Like identical twins but one being a boy and one being a girl. (Sorry 5.3 guys lol)

Well I mean a higher hp motor will indeed use more fuel to make more power, that’s kind of irrelevant because it’s canceled out by the increased in velocity. I mean miles per gallon is fuel used over distance. The quantity of fuel injected into the combustion chamber is an irrelevant figure by itself as far as efficiency.

 

Random example that has completely fabricated numbers- 

6.2 at WOT 0-60 mph - 400cc per combustion for 5.5 seconds

5.3 at WOT 0-60 -330cc per combustion for 7 seconds

 

They might use the same amount fuel.

 

Just trying to explain that more power is not necessarily more fuel consumption, not just while cruising, but at WOT as well.

What is the weight of these 2 vehicles ? More important what is the weight disparity between the two trucks ? Power to weight ratio going to play a big part too if their happens to be say 700 lbs.

5.3 and 6.2? Maybe like 50lbs from the forged guts, bigger exhaust, and beefier rear diff, and whatever else is beefier.

 

The real difference is body styles.

 

I'm pretty sure 4wd double cabs and crew cabs are around 5500lbs

I'm pretty sure 2wd regular cab is about a 1000lbs lighter

 

What's amazing is the a 385hp (5.3 on e85) pushing 4500lbs and a 6.2 crew cab run about the same 1/4 mile time (~14.0@100mph)

 

e85 5.3 RCSB = 11.68lbs per horsepower

6.2 CCSB = 13.09lbs per horsepower

 

I think the only explanation is that the 6.2 is god's engine.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
