I just got a re-manufactured Dorman cluster from Summit Auto that was made for 2500/3500.  Tranny gauge came included on that.   Plug and play, worked fine.

I installed a new motor, overlay and needle on my 2004 Silverado Z71 and it didn't work. I had to send it to automotivecircuitsolutions.com to get it programmed. From all the forums that i went through on this issue it looks like some need to be programmed and some don't not sure why. either way it worked after i got it back.

The reason it doesn't work is a programming issue / circuitry inside of the cluster. The best fix for this would be to purchase a 2500 cluster.
