Lift issues

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I purchased a new truck this year and decided to put a lift in. After a lot of research I ended up going with a 4” BDS kit complete with front struts and leaf springs and Fox shocks on the rear. I decided to run with the bds struts for now, I may do the Fox coil overs at some point but I don’t think it’s worth it just yet. I also put some mayhem 20x10 -19 wheels on with 305/75 Mickey Thompson atz’s. The truck looks killer, I can’t say enough about how nice it looks, but when I picked it up from the shop it shook horribly. Turns out they never balanced the wheels and tires. I’m thinking it’s an easy fix, but after getting it back balanced it still has a shimmy at highway speeds. The truck has 3000 miles on it and I was hoping to avoid issues by going with the high end components. What can I do to make it ride smoother? Are there better ways of balancing the wheels than others? Is that likely the issue? It tracks straight and rides nice other than the shimmy at speed. Any suggestions?

I have a 2015 Sierra 1500 w a 6 inch bds, foxes in the rear, rides as smooth as stock at any speed, have not had passed 140 or so km/hr.

Not balancing wheels is a knuckle head move, I would take it back to them and have them double check their work. If your truck did not have the high speed vibration before the lift it should not have it after if it was installed properly. Did they do an alignment after? If not you will burn through your tires quickly so make sure you get that done if it has not been.

Wheels not balanced can make a damn bad shake. I always laugh at cars/truck that drive down the highway and it looks like one wheel is going to bounce into outerspace....get them balanced should improve. If not maybe they messed something else up with the install?

Thanks for the help, I was curious if it was common. I didn’t think so but I’ve heard from some buddies that they all ride like crap it’s just part of lifting it. I don’t agree, and I’m sure the folks at bds wouldn’t either. According to the dealer my truck is still covered by warranty, I got one that covered me when I put the lift In. With that said I had the dealer do the work. I know dealers can do shoddy work, I’m fully aware lol. I felt confident after speaking with the tech and seeing how many lifted trucks they put out so against my better judgement I let them install it. I took it back after they delivered me an undrivable truck and they tried to charge me to balance the wheels! Typical stuff, but now I’m kinda freaked out that it wasn’t installed properly. Any advice? I’m thinking I’ll bring it to a specialty shop that I know will make it right but Ive spent so much at the dealer already I feel like I’m owed a perfect ride.

Btw, more pics to come this weekend, I was too busy joyriding last weekend to take any decent ones ?

First step is getting the wheels balanced.... Then if it is still shaking or whatever take it to someone who knows trucks, lifts, etc. Just my two cents....

As for lifted trucks riding like crap... Some do some don't. From my experience the trucks that have had a crap ride were older trucks.... I've only had the pleasure to ride in one fully lifted 2014+ Silverado one with a 4" and it drove like a stock truck...just an fyi

Thanks, I’ll take them somewhere else to get balanced again and see if it helps. If not, I’ll bite the bullet and take it to a specialist. Probly should either way just to make sure I’m all set. Nothing’s worse than a brand new truck you aren’t happy with.

#truth..

Plus if it is out of alignment those expensive tires could get worn fast!!!

I don't see how you can put a lift with larger wheels and tires and expect the same ride as stock. You're adding leafs in the rear that are stuffer, or more leafs, and the front has stiffer springs I believe. Add in the rotating mass of the wheels and the more aggressive tread with higher rating and you're going to get a less comfortable ride. Sure the new trucks are better than old trucks but we are stilling talking less comfortable than stock.

I think anyone that argues this point is just trying to justify their purchase. I paid good money for a BDS kit with good tires/rims and a professional install and it doesn't ride near as nice as stock.I smile every time I see it though.

I guess that’s why we do it right? I feel the same way, and I agree with you honestly I don’t expect stock ride quality. It’s gonna be stiffer and bounce all over the road sometimes, but I wasn’t expecting to feel the shake and stiffness in the front end. That’s all I’m sayin, I mean where’s the line that we settle on between what the truck should look like and ride quality. If I want to drive the thing 250 miles I think I’d pull my hair out shaking the whole damn time and looking down and seeing 3200 miles on my truck. That can’t be acceptable
