I have been less than impressed with the capless experience because I like to use the cap to prop the handle so I don’t have to stand there and stare at whatever there is not worth staring at.    But not now....except...

 

first, many tier 1 stations in my area have the ratchet removed.   I needed an always-convenient-when-I-fueled means to prop the handle.   My pocket knife didn’t work well because when the handle popped, it threw the knife under the truck.  My company ID sort of worked.  But now,,,

 

i cut 2-7/8” section off of a yardstick.  Drilled a hole and put a 1/2” key ring in it.   Then I looked for something I could secure inside the gas compartment.   Thankfully, GM provided a little hole in the door that I could run a section of one of those cheap chains through.   It all tucks nicely inside, allowing the cover to close.  There’s even a place to hook the key ring.    

 

Does it look OEM?   Um, no.   Can anyone see it?  No.   Does it bother me since it looks so homemade?  Yes.   We’ll see.

I often wonder what is the reason for removing the ratchet device.  I have never seen one fail but I've seen patrons leave their car or sit inside while filling up with customers (like me) waiting behind to fill.  I was annoyed at first when I had to stand at my car while filling but I soon realized that there is not a significant amount of productive time lost to worry about.

Kindling?

The ratchet is removed so if it malfunctions and doesn't shut off you are there to shut it off IMO.

I have two yardsticks.   Now one is a 33.125” stick.   Cobwebs on a corner in the garage?  Or, one day when I’m particularly industrious, it will be relegated to the recycle bin along with various accumulated crap.  

 

Alas, its measuring days are over I’m afraid...?

I’m not irresponsible enough to get back in my truck while filling, but use the time to put my credit card back in my wallet, wallet back in the console (don’t tell anyone I keep it there), look at my phone, wonder where at 10am that guy is going with two 6-packs, etc.   I stay outside.

Seems up here it depends more on the gas or station brand. The Speedways (used to be Hess) don't have the latches, but the Nice & Easy Shops stations (many of them having name brand gas and non-ethanol premium) still have them.

The Nice & Easy stations are being bought up by Circle K lately, don't know which way they will end up.

 

 

By the way, tennis ball works for me.
