Why must GM fight me

Okay I put a flowmater muffler on my truck right. Went to GM to have the injector system cleaned. They told me that my flowmaster muffler voided my warranty and that the muffler allowed for more air to come in than the electronic mother in-law wanted and has or will possibly burn my valves and probably screwed up my injector system. Now this is what pissed me off I called GM and asked them if I could replace the factory muffler with a flowmaster and they said it would void the exhuast warranty from the muffler back. And now their claiming the enitre warranty is gone. I'm paying 35-40 a month extra for the dang extended warranty so that's bulls**t.

CMNT does this sound correct will your average dealer void your warranty for an aftermarket muffler system. I'll put the dang factory back on it to get my 100K warranty back. This pissed me off bad. The guy at the dealership was like sir you need to calm down and quit scaring the customers.

The muffler should only void the exhaust (not the cats or anything else). At least that is the way that I understand the law...

bust out the (fill in the blank i cant think of the correct na,e) act which says (short version) the dealer has to prove the modification caused something to fail

yea it was I knew the moss part but always forget the other one

Thanks guys

Yo man, that dealer has some balls.

Im sure they tell that to everyone who has a mod just so they can get out of doing the work. I dont understand.

You need to call up GM customer support (find number in your ownders manual).

Tell the person what happened and tell them that you know your rights and the Magnuson/Moss Act gives you certain rights with regards to aftermarket parts and modifications. Get the Service Mgrs name (let him watch you write it down too) and tell him that you need a written explanation of the refusal so that you can provide proof to the BBB, FTC, and/or your lawyer.

To sum it up as i read it, no warranty work can be denied just becuase an aftermarket part has been added.

The warranty work in question must be a result of the aftermarket part!

Why were you having your injectors cleaned? Is it part of a free matintenance?

Was something wrong?

You might want to contact your muffler manufacturer as well, they are usually happy to help with any warranty problems.

They may fax you some info to help you out.

If that fails, contact the BBB.

Personal experience has told me that you cant always fix things with the Service Managers, but you may want to try once more and tell them what you know about your rights as well as tell them that you will go thru GM and the BBB if they cant help you.

Ive had to deal with this and although its not something one looks forward to, its pretty gratifying

You may want to try going over the Service Manager's head. He/she has a boss too. They do not have the authority to "void" your warranty. Only GM can do that. They CAN refuse to do warranty work if they believe it won't be covered. Maybe they've had some issues in the past with doing warranty work that they weren't compensated for. In any case, you should contact GM yourself. No telling what they may have told them about your vehicle. The law is meant to protect the consumer but the main problem is enforcement. The only way to enforce the law is thru the court system. Whom do you think Congress is going to listen to? An individual consumer or the the auto manufacturers with deep pockets? I know it sounds unfair but that's the reality. I find that it's best to develop a good relationship with the service dept BEFORE any potential problems come up. Have you tried another dealer? Not all dealers are like that. I have found that most are very willing to do whatever they can to help you.

Is there anything wrong with your injector system or the motor itself? Did they clean the injectors for you? I just don't see how they got on the whole warranty issue. Fuel injection cleaning is a service you have to pay for anyway. Unless something was wrong with the truck. From what you posted it just sounds like the dealer is making assumptions they should not be making. Dealers can be interesting to work with for sure. Good luck...

Technically by the letter of GM's warranty, yes. Practically, NO!

As previously stated, the muffler will only void the EXHAUST system warranty. All a muffler is is a noise suppression device. It completes this task by adding baffling and ports inside a shell with some form of insulating device to accomplish it's task.

By replacing it with an aftermarket unit that brings back the sound also brings back the airflow lost due from all that extra baffling and insulating. That increase in airflow as well as velocity is not enough (especially since it's soo far downstream) to overly affect the TB on your truck that it or the MAF become overburdened.

Sorry, I don't buy it and I think it's bogus. Move on to the next dealer. Ask them if they treat Vette owners who remove their precious factory exhaust systems in favor of a better performing aftermarket unit the same way?

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
