So Roczcqg, your saying if the adjustment  in the software fixes the alerts it’s ok? Let’s put this in perspective, you at abc tire to buy a set of awesome AT tires. The shop says, hey one of them had a leak and we patched it. Good as new, Are you ok with that or do you want a replacement?

Or, your cruisen down the road haulin  your Razr and family for a weekend in the hills and the trailer brake fuse blows cause GM never fixed the short in the system. You lost control and a family member in the accident. I wonder how you would feel about the software fix then.

If GM during their testing phase, detected the problem we are experiencing, then they developed the fix and applied it. So the truck goes on sale and no one knows the difference because everything concerning the Trailer connection works perfectly. No problem then. Thats in a perfect world. GM missed a few problems during their testing phase ie Trailer functions, Camera views, Infotainment problems etc. GM has issued updates or applied a fix for most of the problems. Once a problem arises, that issue begins a sort of tracking stat. When is becomes prevalent ie by number of warranty claims, calls from dealers or customers, GM starts looking into it. Now GM knew about this Trailer problem back in Feb 2018 and has been working on it since. How hard have they been working on it? Do not know. But they released a fix and now guess what, we get to test and find out the result. I am sure they have ran their own tests but we are the real testers. Now is there a hardware cause for this problem that they are masking or is a software patch good? The software patch could change setpoints, it could change the way the chips react to certain stimuli, It could prioritize communications on the data bus etc. All I am saying is if after the patch is applied and everything works as described by the user manual, Dealerships, GM's info handouts, and the driver has not experienced any problems, then I guess they fixed it.

You will know if the problem is fixed if you shut the truck off with the trailer plugged in see if the lights come on and off with you behind your trailer

That is something to check for sure. It looks like the software update involves an update of the operating system and calibrations to the Trailering Module.

Got my truck reprogrammed this morning (took about 15 - 20 minutes).  Unfortunately the temps here are not supposed to drop below 25 for at least the next week.  I will post if I notice an desensitization of the sensors from past experiences. I may not know until December if this fix actually worked.

Same here. The timing of this annoys me beyond belief. If it was just software, how did it take nearly a year to correct???

This is only to make some of the worst trucks drivable and eliminate some nuance alerts. The mild and intermittent short is still there. The original fix was to change the trailer module, then the plug and some wire harness. None of that worked. That admitted they new it was a short, they just can’t find it.

The real concern should be long term damage on other electrical components and if it may cause critical failures. Most critical industrial equipment with electronic controls have ground fault indicators with shutdowns to protect the electronics and equipment from damage.

I understand Chevy taking this cheap way around, they are risking a lot. Hopefully it is an intermittent step. I also think the fault will be found if not already. I just hope they have done all the risk analysis to prevent serious failures or possible injuries.

My truck said it was 5° this morning
No warnings or errors popped up
Ran the truck through the car wash night before to get all the connections nice and wet

Put your truck thru the Rough 'n' Tough and let us know how the Trailer System works.

I will try to check as many different scenarios that I can think of

Approx 40 miles of the trip will be on dirt road in Quebec

The forecast is in the 20s with 5 to 7 inches of snow on travel day

Glad to hear it's all sorted out so far!  Looking forward to getting mine fixed as well.

The trip went well

The trailer detection system worked

Gm accessory camera that mounts to the rear of the trailer and plugs in did not work so well

Lost connection or truck did not recognize it I still have to diagnose it

The antitheft system is a pain it flashes the leds nonstop When Truck is off and trailer is still plugged in

I may be the happiest man on earth that I have a low mileage 2005 K1500 without all the bells and whistles. No, I take that back, the Apollo 13 astronauts are as the GM engineers weren't in charge of the fix.

This is actually a great post. Very informative. Especially the section named Tips. It clearly shows how Chevy is putting the responsibility for it to work correctly on the consumer. Why would you come out with a new model year and the module will not work with LED bulbs? This is standard equipment on trailers and a very popular upgrade. It is understandable older trucks have issues with LED’s. Why not fix their design on a new model year to work with LED lights?

No different than the dumb windshield washer button midway down the blinker switch handle and the auto headlights a push button on the end of it. Which do you use most.

These new trucks look and run great so we have a great start if we can get Chevy to listen and fix the squirrelly software and electronic parts. They should have a “engineer meet your truck user day” and design to today’s standards and uses. Rain, snow, cold and mud, LED lights etc... Not the soccer mom.

    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
    • I gotta say, I'm enjoying your narration. The troubles you've been having are amusing as you describe them. It's good to see that you're finally getting some satisfaction out the old beast though.
