What is up with the pastel letter and number Avatar migration?

It's absolutely horrible. First letter of the persons screen name, unless they have a pic. Now, we see a sh!t load of letters in different colors.

Marty, I was just thinking this myself!  Personally I do not care for them.

Looks like some sort of google app etc

Appears to be enough for a fruit salad.

I've seen similar on other forums, like Expedition Portal for example.  Most people that are active participants choose a custom avatar.
