So I bought an extended warranty today.

I just bought an extended warranty through my GM dealer yesterday for my new 2019 Sierra Denali before I read about Denny plan. All 2018-2019 GMC vehicles come with a fully transferable, no deductible, 5-year/60,000 mile, Powertrain Limited Warranty. And my truck has the GM bumper to bumper 36/36k standard warranty. But I purchased an 8 year/100k fully transferable (or prorated refund) extended warranty with $100 “disappearing” deductible, meaning 0 deductibles at my local dealer where I purchased my truck and $100 deductible at any other repair facility, includes towing, rental car and road hazard, etc. It was their top warranty that I got for $1800 and works out to under $19 per month, but I just realized that it is really for only 60 months since the first 36 months are covered, so it actually works out to $30 per month. They made this offer because I agreed to finance entire purchase price at 7% which I will pay 90% in first payment, then 5% the next month and 5% on third payment leaving only the interest to be paid off day after 3rd payment clears. The finance deal gave me a $1000 rebate but must borrow at least $10k and keep loan open for minimum of 90 days. Dealer paid me way more than the interest on the loan will be by lowering my already negotiated best purchase price by a few hundred dollars. Also got free oil and filter changes, lube jobs and tire rotations with balancing for life. Dealer obviously got a nice kick-back by getting me to do a loan through them. I still got a great deal and I am very happy but I apparently could have saved some money by waiting a couple of years and buying the “Denny” plan, maybe? However I think my local dealer will give me better service for being such a loyal customer and not shopping them on the warranty to save a couple of hundred bucks, just not worth it in my opinion.

Dream on.

I have developed a pretty good relationship with them over the years as they are a Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer and my last vehicle was a Chevy Tahoe Z71 and a Trailblazer SS before that as well a Silverado before that. I know about half the service department employees by first name and most everyone there recognizes me even if they don’t know my name. Only know a few of the sales staff because I don’t deal with them often. The dealership is very active in community service and well established here for a couple of generations that I have known them. But all dealerships treat some customers better than others and I completely understand your skepticism as I am not treated the same way at the dealership where my wife’s car was purchased and is serviced. I don’t know if it is a foreign car thing or what, but too bad they cannot be more like the GM dealership.

Good for you. One of the (few) lucky ones. Small and local maybe? Most dealers care only about the next sale.

I know how I am and therefor know I won't get an extended warranty but for others that don't work on their vehicles, or don't want to, I can see the value in the warranty.

I figure if the lifters crap out on me, what am I in it for? What's the repair cost if I do it myself? $500? $600? I was spending that much a year on my Lexus after it hit the 70,000 mile mark...control arms, wheel bearings...$500-$600 a year, and that was on minor repairs doing it myself. I figure unless I launch a tranny in this truck (something I am concerned with), the minor repairs and parts are relatively cheap.

So to justify me spending $3,000 on a warranty I'd have to have my lifters and transmission go out, for it to be worth my while. And I'm not sure that's going to happen. I still see and hear from people that own these trucks with 150,000 plus miles without AFM issues. Talked to a guy yesterday....168,000 miles...I say to him, you know these trucks have known issues with the lifters, he looks at me like I'm crazy. Another guy I know has over 200,0000 on his (construction truck), he says to me that he bombs up and down the highway all day in the truck with the thing loaded to the gills, never an issue. And I believe him, I've never seen such an abused vehicle in my life. This guy would throw used oil in it if he could. So I think some of these major repairs are hit or miss, maybe too hit or miss.

Being that I’ve never really kept a vehicle long enough to have had any of these breakdowns, I’ve always had an extended warranty added just in case I did keep it. You’re correct about hit or miss. I’ve got friends with Fords and GM’s with many miles on them but very well maintained miles with Zero mechanical issues with either and they too have extended warranties just in case. My factory warranty is out on my 16 Yukon once it hit 36k but has an extended 100k warranty. Some may think a 5 year 200k extended warranty is a waste of money but I’d agree with you, $500-$600 per year is damn well worth having one considering what we all pay for some stupid worthless mods.

Yes, smaller, local hometown boy done good but outgrown their space and had to completely move the used car business across the road and a little further away. Definitely outgrown their service area. I do feel lucky because I have dealt with the big boys in the past with less fortunate results. Back then I worked on my own vehicles and would never buy or recommend an extended warranty but they have more place today, although I would not pay $3,000 for one.

The 3rd party warranty my dealership sells is excellent, it's a company called CNA.  They even have a plan now that goes up to 150K and they cover shocks and struts now, which they never did.  We sell a lot of work to the warranty company, and most of the writers know how to talk to them so they never send an insurance adjuster down to look at the truck.
