Crusty Wrecked own aluminum wheels

these oem wheels are functional but they are so crusty and unable to get clean.   I tried sandpaper but it’s not strong enough.  I tried a wire brush and it’s not strong enough.  I tried steel wool and it seems to get rid of it, but it’s peeling away the thin protective covering

Anyone have any other thoughts then steel wooling them and removing the finish?

I can’t imagine it will upset the balance of the wheel?

The "thin protective covering" has failed.  That's why your wheels have oxidized.  Don't worry about removing more of it.  Ideally, you will want to remove all of the coating, and all of the oxidization, using steel wool, or another abrasive method of your choice.  Then, clean thoroughly, and add another protectant of your choice,  like a spraybomb of clear-coat for example.

Check in your area for someone who does "Dustless Blasting" they should be able to remove the failed coating and the corrosion. Or check with someone that does powder coating they may be able to clean them up and then clear powder coat them.

By the time you unmount the tires, blast, powdercoat, remount, and balance, you could be getting close to the cost of some new or near new takeoffs from a newer truck.  So replacement could be an option to keep in mind.

If you must keep, some sort of stripper or blasting would do the best.

If you don't have to keep that wheel, a clean set of your choice of takeoff wheels from almost any 1999-2019 truck would be my pick.

Get new wheels and tires from tire rack.

With the dustless blasting I don't believe you would need to remove the tires, so after blasting you could spray on a clear coat.
