Leveling. What is it and why.

I’m pretty new to trucks.  I read often about people leveling their trucks and wonder exactly what it is and why people do it.  I get that they are actually leveling the truck, but I barely see any rake on a stock truck and ask, what am I missing?  Is it just a cosmetic preference that many have?  Does it go along with other suspension mods, as in, is it a must do if you do “X” to your truck?  Does it have a functional aspect?  Better towing or handling?

 

Appreciate some help understanding this.
