Removing rust/undercoating

Recommended Posts

You will get best results if you wire wheel. Easiest way is to pull off the bed, wash, wire wheel, and then paint. Pulling the bed makes access easier and the rear of the frame will likely need the most attention anyway.

POR15 is awesome stuff.

Don't expect doing something like this to really help, unless you do a virtually perfect job.  Places where you don't get the por15 will rust, and it works under the por15 from those spots.

I would suggest regularly spraying the underside with something like Fluid Film, or even used motor oil.  Messy, but fairly effective at keeping rust at bay...

I'm a firm believer in Fluid Film.  My truck came from road salt heaven (Canada).  It was Fluid Filmed early in it's life.  9 years later and only have minor surface rust.  Heavier rust in the spots where the fluid film washed off.  I'm going to reapply before winter hits.
