I have a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado with Z71 package.  I consume 2 quarts oil in 5k miles. The dealer and manufacture said this is NORMAL.  My questions;  why is it normal, any fix to this issue.  My 2006 Honda Ridgeline with 135,000 never consumed oil.
If anyone can help with my truck oil issue it would hopefully help me to continue paying it off over the next 5 years!!! Any new trucks out there that don’t consume oil like mine????

My 2015 1500 uses none in 5K miles.

It has 105,000 miles on the clock.

Guess that is abnormal then?

It is NOT normal. GM f'ed up, and wants YOU to eat the cost of that.

Par for the course, sorry to say. NOTHING has changed since the 2007 model year in that regard. Wish they'd do us all a favor and go out of business. No idea why they haven't yet ... ?

What engine?  All our Acaida's we had with the 3.6l engine never consumed any oil and we traded them with 80k on each one,  2008 and a 2011.

Push the issue.  Call the customer service number in the owners manual.  2qts in 5k is consumption and something is wrong.

Why do you say "dealer and manufacture"?  Don't know why, but it just does not sounf right to me.  I think you will find that one quart every 2500 miles is considered acceptable.  Does not matter what anonymous internet posts claim to get out of 1 quart/litre.  Have they run the oil consumption test?  Is your truck nearly approaching  the end of warranty, and this is the first you have mentioned oil consumption to the dealer?

How do you still have 5years left on a 4 year old vehicle?  Did you purchase this truck new or used?

My 26 year old Volvo 940 with the 2.3 4-banger, at 190k miles, uses 1/2 a quart in 5k miles.

My '86 Mercury Grand Marquis with the 5.0 V8, at 267k miles, leaks a quart in 1,500 miles ... but burns nothing. Just sayin ...

i purchased the truck as certified used with purchase of extended warranty with the certified warranty.  I paid 1 year on loan thus far. GM has an oil consumption bulletin out stating the oil consumption allowance for this truck. I was not aware of it at the time of purchase.  And I did look up any available bulletins while buying the truck. The reason I found out was when trying to schedule a oil change with the dealer.  I had 8% left on the oil schedule reminder.  Sitting a a traffic light the “low oil message” light came on.  I pulled it off the road and checked it out.   No oil on the oil stick.  I called the dealer service as they were closing and said just put two quarts in.   I got to the dealer 4 days later for oil service and they gave me the bulletin and a chart to monitor my oil each time I filled gas.  They also enabled the engine hours on the info dash and had to write that and other info.  GM states if I burn more then 1 qt oil in 1,000 miles that would be an issue.  Or more than 2 quarts in 5k miles. I use 2 quarts in 5k miles, so GM said it’s normal. Thus, the dealer can’t repair anything as there isn’t anything wrong.

What you need to do is prove more that 1qt in 1,000 miles.  Did the 2 quarts get oil level to full, or just put oil on the stick?  I think that "certified used" is what you need to push. You also may want to get the service history on the truck.  See if the oil consumption was an issue for original owner, also see how many prior owners there have been.

This week we did the 1,000 mile oil consumption test.  It did not use anything.
When the two quarts of oil were put in it brought the level on the stick to full.
I am the second owner to the truck.
Carfacts doesn’t show any recorded issues.

Again.  For the third time in following my oil consumption since the original finding, my truck uses 2 quarts of oil in 5k miles when I go in for an oil change. According to GM - this is normal for this engine.  I don’t tow or run it hard. Mostly a commuter truck driving mixed roads for about 65 miles per day.  It just annoying that this engine is made this way on this truck and GMC equal size truck Canyon.  Bulletin #01-06-01-011K. It's not normal.  My '09 went through a lot of oil during the first 50K miles.  GM finally fixed it after I jumped through a lot of hoops.  I kept the same truck for another 100K without any further issues.  My current truck ('15 Sierra) is like Grumpy Bear's!   Be persistent.  Tip:  If your dealer changes your oil, check that they don't fill above the full line.  This will mess up your consumption test.

Did they get you a new short block or rebuild your engine.

    • Pretty much zero rust on the truck, the frame is super clean. Non-snowy area of California for its whole life. They didn't mention JB weld specifically, just a silicone style seal.
    • Needs a manifold gauge hooked up and the pressures read.   If you don't have one, time to take it to a shop and have it diagnosed.
    • How rusty is the truck?     The transfer cases on these are an aluminum case.  If its anything like the rear diffs on the 2015-2022 Chevy Trax, those will corrode bad to the point it will push fluid through the housing via corrosion porosity or a crack from age/stress.    We have seen folks over tighten the drain and fill plugs on these transfer cases and crack them that way as well.    So I'd say its a 50/50 shot on re-sealing the case.  If all of the surfaces are good and its not badly corroded, they probably can re-seal it.  GM uses RTV to seal the case halves.   If they mention JB Weld, the issue is the case.  Be it a crack or corrosion.  JB Weld "might" hold if they clean EVERYTHING very well and drain the fluid out of the case and clean the crack and then seal it.
    • A while back, my truck (2018 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3) went in for an o2 sensor and routine service. The tech identified that my rear output seal on my transfer case was leaking, and recommended I have them replace it. At the time I didn't think anything of it, and had them do the repair. Less than a month later, I noticed that the recently repaired seal was leaking again. I called the shop that did the repair and they warrantied the repair and replaced the same seal again. A few months later, I noticed that once again the same seal leak had come back. It wasn't a great time to bring it in and I ended up just living with it for 6 months or so, noticing small (smaller than a baseball) size oil stains below the truck when it would sit for a while, as well as oil spray on the frame (to the point where it actually took the underbody coating off in that one spot). Finally got around to brining it in again, but this time I took it to a dealership service center since I am in a different part of the state for school. They identified the same output seal leaks and recommended they replace them. They also said there was no scoring on the inside of the transfer case, so it didn't need to be replaced. They chalked up the original repair failures to non oem seals and a job that wasn't done correctly. Now they called and said the seals are holding after driving/sitting for a while, but they found a very small leak in the middle, that they recommended they seal with some kind of silicone/jb weld (not sure what they are using). I haven't picked up the truck yet, but I have been reluctant about this whole repair process because I feel like they are just fixing the same thing that keeps coming back, and I am concerned there could be another root cause for the seal failing. Has anybody else experienced anything like this, or have any ideas on other things that could be the root cause?
