Just returned from a 500 mile road trip, ran fine all the way, 70-80 mph, MPG's down from 22 to 20. Noticed black soot in tailpipe, wipes off easily. See photo. Normal or not? Thanks

In a perfectly balanced combustion reaction with a hydrocarbon, the only byproduct is Carbon Dioxide and Water.

An imbalanced, imperfect combustion reaction (which is what happens in the real world) you can also get carbon, carbon monoxide, and any other compound that comes from the fuel additives. This is where you get tailpipe soot.

I remember back in the leaded gas days people were real proud if their tail pipes were white. I being a little mischievous at the job site put some grease on the inside of some of the tail pipes. Lunch time came around some gear heads were anxiously discussing what potential problems could be arising. About 20 people in all. One even pulled some plugs. Someone finally figured the prank out. I definitely didn’t own up. Bodily harm could have been possible. Tough crowd.

You can expect a cleaner burn (not perfect, but pretty clean) by running at high speed for a long distance.

Back in the 60-70s engine RPMs sang a higher tune. 2-4 speed transmissions and a little gear 2500-3000 rpm cruising wasn’t unusual. Neither was 25 cents a gallon gas.

Looks exactly like mine, only difference is the GMC logo.

Wasn't that a time. Back in the early 90s my parents didn't give a crap what fuel cost. We had a full size conversion van and my dad's 1500, both V8s.

Normal! My truck has only 2200 miles and after a few days it's got it. I wash my cars once a week and part of the weekly detailing includes wiping the tailpipe!

I went with the black ceramic tip with my exhaust, the soot blends right in. My last truck had dual chrome tips and it was a pain keeping them clean.

I had a new Silverado back in 92'. I remember paying about $1.20 per gallon & if you would go north of South Florida, some of the stations off of the turnpike were $1.00 per gallon. So yes, everyone purposely had V-8 cars & trucks and could afford them.
