4 Wheel Drive issues

I have a 2008 Z71 1500 and am having issues with the 4 wheel drive. its intermittent so not a constant thing all the time.

I am getting a message on the message center in the cluster that says Service 4 wheel drive system. if that message is displayed it will not engage. Mine has the dial next to the steering column for the selector.

If it is not showing the message on the message center it works fine and will engage and disengage when its needed.

With the weather coming more now I would like to get it figured out.

I am thinking Encoder motor or the sensor but I have no idea how to check it and don't want to be just randomly buying parts to throw at it.

anyone give me any tips to check to see whats wrong or am I going to have to do into the dealer to have it checked out.

Luke, you need to get hold of a bi-directional scan tool, like the Tech-2 or VXDIAG NANO and a tablet.  The Tech-2 can read the internal codes and test the various components so you will not be wasting money throwing parts at it.  If you decide to buy a Tech-2, it will quickly pay for itself.
