Hi Everyone,

 

I had amp power steps installed last week on my AT4. They are a little loud when they retract, there is a knock i hear once i close my door and they close. Is that normal? Should they be pretty quiet?

Sorry I can’t help but I’m looking forward to some info on this too. 
 

Mine aren’t overly loud but there is a decent “knock” sound when they go back up. When moving forward from a stop I can hear a little clunking sound but can’t figure out where from. The steps are on there solid. It’s only at low speed and not like they’re rattling around constantly.

I put mine on almost a year ago. They are definitely not silent. The thump when they go up is normal, even the factory tri-mode steps make that sound.


If installed incorrectly I’ve heard there’s a cab mount on the frame they may hit. Mine aren’t even close to anything but you can crawl under and double check that. If they aren’t banging into anything, run ‘em.

Mine are not silent either but way worth it. I will never have a truck without them. The only thing I hear is the knock when they fully retract

Thanks everyone. There is no rattle when driving and they feel solid when stepping in. I just wanted to be sure the knock noise was normal and based on the responses it seems that is the case. I love them so far!

I've had mine on for a year now and they have been loud from day one. I checked to make sure they weren't hitting anything or binding up somehow after they were installed. I found that they were hitting a bracket for a body mount at the rear of the cab just as they came to a stop. I ground a bit off the corner and painted it over to prevent rust and they clear it now. However, they're still loud. I guess its just the mechanism and I have grown used to it.

Both sides on mine hit the frame brace so I cut a little off of the corner of the brace and no more touching. They do clunk when going up but the ones on my Tacoma make the same sound. Before cutting a piece off there was a mechanical sound when driving slowly over bumps. That sound has disappeared since trimming the mount and no further contact between steps and brace.  Love the Amp Steps and love the no-step look when raised,

Ok so I spent some time under the truck today and figured out what my problem was. 
 

To recap: I was unsatisfied with two things. (1) was the loud clunk the steps made when folding back up under the truck and (2) there seemed to be another clunking sound on occasion when driving around. Usually at low speeds from a stopped position. Sounded like a baseball was loose in the bed for a couple seconds. 
 

The rear bracket of my steps are installed further back than others or what the instructions say. While I prefer this look and the symmetry to the front bracket, it creates an issue when hitting part of the frame underneath when it contracts back up. Not the Step hitting the rocker panel under the door like I first suspected but it’s the step bracket. 
 

My quick & easy short term fix was to use a section of Foam/Sponge Window Seal I had in the garage (~$5 from Lowe’s). 
 

see pics below, hope this can help some of you. Or caution others as they install theirs.

Oh to add to my post above. I stuck about a 1.5” cut off of the sponge window seal onto the bracket of the power step. You can see the indention where it hits 
 

this really really dampens down the sound. It’s actually quite pleasant now ?

Good idea, might have to try that.

 

As far as bracket position, are you one of the unlucky people that didn’t get a set of holes a little forward of the rear-most ones? My brackets clear that body mount by 6” or so.

I did not get the second set of holes either so mine are positioned on the last set. I do like them there as I also like the symmetry of the front to back positioning. That bracket is the one I cut a triangle piece off of and now have a nice gap between the rotating bracket and the steel support piece. Mine still made noise once in a while and when checking, my steps were barely touching the truck in the rear. I loosen the bolts on the motor bracket and added a 1/8 inch shim between the bracket and the truck, so now nothing touches and nice and quiet.

It’s about a 3-4 hour job all in. Mounting the steps took no time, spent way more time routing and running the harness. It’s DIY doable and plug and play though. Nothing hard about it.

I just bought a 2024 1500 trail boss. And got my AMP steps today and I thought it was plug and play but it has a white and blue wire that needs to be hooked up as well. So does anyone know if the 2024 not just have plug and play?

I have a '23. You need to tap into 2 wire at the BCM, plus the OBD connector.

    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions? 
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!  
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
