2018 Sierra Remote Transmission Filter

Recommended Posts

Thanks to members FL335i, cossack and others for providing the motivation to do this project.

I've got a 2018 Sierra 1500, 5.3 V8 with the 6L80E transmission, I decided to do a remote transmission filter installation similar to previous members.

Truck was purchased new and has 30,000km (about 18600 miles)

My 2018 has a slightly different setup for the transmission lines as they exit the cooler. Earlier models in the 2014-2018 range have the metal trans line exit the cooler then route back into the radiator, down the radiator, and out the bottom. My 2018 has the metal trans line exit the cooler, but does NOT re-enter the radiator. It simply goes straight down and bends around back into the transmission. (see diagram)

Parts used:

- Derale 13005 Remote Transmission Filter Kit

- 2 Gates 28602 Heater Hose Connectors (-65°C to +250°C / -85°F to +480°F).

- 4.5 feet of Hayden Automotive 106 Transmission Oil Cooler Hose

- 3/8" worm clamps (6)

- Wix 51269 Spin-on Hydraulic Filter

- Teflon tape

Disregard the word "TEXT" on last picture, it was an error.

When I cut the OEM trans hose, it cut quite easily using a basic razor blade. Not much fluid came out, only like 100ml or so.

I mounted the filter on the left side of the frame (driver side) whereas I believe FL335i's was mounted in a similar position, but on the passenger side.

As previous members have mentioned, the hardest part was figuring out exactly where to mount it. Once you have it mounted, the rest goes quick.

I drove it around to get the trans fluid temp above 82C / 180F , checked the filter and lines were hot, so far no leaks and everything seems to run normal.  Hope this is helpful for anyone else who wants to do this mod.

About 1 year now and 20,000 kilometers, no issues at all with the setup. The filter only receives fluid when the fluid temp is at or above 82C / 180F so it's safe to say the actual mileage is a fair bit less than 20k due to short drives not reaching those temps. I haven't "flipped the pill" yet in the transmission.

Changed out my spin-on filter today (Wix 51269 Hydraulic Filter) and cut open the old one just to see what it looked like. Can't see anything with the naked eye, I guess everything is good, transmission shifts like new.

May I ask what considerations went into the choice of the WIX 51269 filter?

Certainly.

1. It fit the remote mount I was using.

2. I like Wix for their combination of quality, reputation and value.

3. It's specifically designed as a fluid power filter.

I thought it might have had something to do with it's Beta 20 ratio at 17 micron and nominal 10 micron rating or perhaps the 8 psi bypass valve. I note the element is cellulose and found it different for a rating so fine. That takes some deep diving to find such a gem. Well done.

Few years later, I'm at 85000+ miles on the transmission, everything functions great, no issues at all with the remote trans filter setup.

Just added a Tru-Cool 40k transmission cooler to supplement my system. Tied it into my remote trans filter using a sandwich adapter.

Does anyone know of a kit that will accomplish this?

No kits per se, but it's easy to piece together:

Derale 13005 filter mount --- just attach it to your frame ahead of the engine with the supplied screws (drill a pilot hole first)

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-13005

Grab a Wix 51269 (or Napa 1269) fluid power filter / hydraulic filter

https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/wix,51269,filter,8600

That's basically it......just need a few feet of 3/8 oil cooler hose from your local auto parts store, a few worm clamps and 2 heater hose connectors --- put it all together and you're good to go.
