Yes I had with this truck tryed to get the dealer to resolve it, started at about 50K, fianlly i got it resolved, sold it and Bought a Dodge with a HEMi. LOL

That's hilarious considering that the "Hemi's" are known for knocking like hell at cold start up. Especially when they've been sitting for a few days or more. I've worked at a few Chrysler dealerships and its always blown me away hearing so many brand new cars and trucks do this.

Yep the wife's truck does it at start up but it usually goes away. The '03 Tahoe that I drive here on camp is bad. Barely cranks, runs like crap, and generally ragged out after only 26k klicks. I guess that's life on a FOB.

2000 silverado 1500 with 5.3 motor and 92000 miles.

raps and knocks so loud on start up that i am often embarrased to be seen sitting in it.

rapping/knock is worse as the weather gets colder. like now.

try to drive it when it is not warmed up and it sounds like the motor is comming apart.

embarrasing is an understatement.

2003 5.3 with 125k+ knocks off and on. Synthetic oil for 120k+ miles. No oil use in 10000+ miles between changes. No leaks, good that way.

Mine ticks a little on startup but only when my oil is getting old...like below 35% left on my oil life indicator. I use Mobil 1 oil, too.

1999 Chevrolet Silverado, 5.3L, 135,000 miles.

Purchased the truck 3 months ago. I drove it for about 2 months. I changed to oil just before it started getting colder (less than 50°). I noticed this knock once sound when starting up after having changed the oil from Amsoil over to Rotella. I am now using Mobile 1. It only happens when I initially start it up, then goes away after running for about a minute, whether driving or sitting. It is MUCH more pronounced if I drive it right away so I just let it run for a while. I was told that the Rotella, being a high-detergent deisel oil cleaned off a 'cushion' of something like carbon buildup/sludge etc in the motor and now this is the result...knocking. If I start it 5 hours later, no knocking. Pretty much only happens once when it's cold after sitting for over 10 hours I think. I wonder if there is an issue with oil pressure lacking in some areas or, maybe I'm using the wrong oil weight or brand?

There is a lady at work who has a 2007 Expedition that knocks like crazy at first startup and goes away after about 10-15 seconds. What is causing this issue on new engines these days? I've had old old cars and no sounds like this. I even had a 60 Buick lesabre dealer demo car that had a motor that was seized up after sitting for 20 years with 63k miles on it. I got it loose after soaking the engine for a few months and that wildcat motor smoked, but didn't knock even! It had scales on the valves and intake area and started smoking though.

Post the year model/engine/mileage here. Just curious!

My 2000 silverado-1/2 ton with 5.3 began knocking at around 30,000 miles..The dealer called it piston slap and said it was normal..I wasnt buying it so I complained right to Chevrolet, they said same as dealer and bumped my engine warranty up to 100,000 miles from 60,000.Truck now has 115,000,still knocks at startup and still runs good with full power. It uses no oil and doesnt seem to be causing any problems..

Couple years ago a co worker had a 2001 Silverado and his was knocking when started. I felt sorry for him, thinking his engine was going bad.:D:D Now I'm in the "join the club" gang.
