Engine Knock

Post the year model/engine/mileage here. Just curious!

Knocks once only on startup. Now at 55K miles and has been consistent since about 5K. Also lets out a nice puff of smoke on startup, but oil consumption is less than 1 qt. per 5K oil change.

92 350 non vortec - no

89 305 non vortec - no

81 454 - no

72 400 - no

 

Thats just the Chevys that I've owned. Not one with knock.

 

No one that I know, with any brand vehicle, any year, has it.

 

I had not heard of it, until I started reading this forum.

 

I refuse to believe that it's "normal".

I have heard it before on my 6.0L. It's not all the time and it it is occaisional on startup with either a cold or moderatly warm engine. I'm guessing the duration is less than 10 seconds.

 

I had a '98 Malibu w/3.1L and a '98 and '00 3.4L Olds minivan that all had it too...

Not sure if I have it or not! I have a tick kind of noise at idle, but you cant really hear it from in the cab! When I rev the engine it either goes away or I just cant hear it because of the engine revving. Hopefully I dont get the knock or whatever you guys have!

I didnt vote because I have it but its intermittant. One day itll knock on startup for about 15-20 secs then it wont do it for a few wks

01 Tahoe 5.3, 30K mi, it's more of a light "tock" that varies in volume but never sounds like a loud knock.

Mine does the exact same thing as yours...it will do it for 3 or 4 days straight only during startup for 10-15 seconds, but then I don't hear it for a few weeks. It's very interesting...I can't find a trend to it.

2003 Sierra 4.8L 11K .... occasional light "tick" when cold at startup for 10 sec or so every now and then, no pattern and not often (top end valve train noise is my guess) ... so I would say I have no knock.

There is no trend for mine either. Mine seems to happen more frequently in the spring and summer rather than in the fall and winter. It has been getting into the 30s lately at night and in the morning mine hasnt knocked (since sept).

 

Mine is a 00 5.3 with almost 41K miles

Hmmm...don't know if this makes a difference or not, but are the vehicles with knock produced in Canada, the US or a combination? I know mine came from our northern friends, eh. My truck is an 02 model, and supposedly if the VIN starts with a 1 or 4 then it was produced in the US and if it starts with a 2 then it was made in Canada. I think it is the same for most late model Silverado trucks.

 

Just curious as I was reading an article on Ford F150's that knocked. After 2 years Ford addressed the problem and fixed the defunct F150's. The strange thing was that only the Canadian made vehicles were affected. All the ones from Detroit were good. Kinda made me feel good that the US wasn't on the faulty end.
