.... but, isn't rumored to have been eliminated in 03 and newer motors ?? If so- what'd they do to fix it ????

According to the recent news article that has been posted here and other lists(about the trucks being replaced), GM said the problem existed up to the '02 models. A piston redesign began with the '03s, although the article didn't state whether this was exactly at the beginning of the '03s, or later during the '03 production year.

Thanks, lrymal. Be nice if we knew at what point the change began. Anyway to break it down by vin or something, I wonder ??

2000 Chev 5.3, 218,600 miles (no thats not a misprint)

Most mornings, it ticks, some it doesn't. apparently there is not a durability issue with the "noise". My previous 99 5.3 did it as well, I traded it with 46K on it, same noise. Neither truck was near as loud as my '97 LT1 Camaro which was rebuilt at 400 miles. Camaro was piston slap, though.

Yeah, the VIN issue is a good question.... I purchased my '03 during December 2002 and has a date of 07/02 on the door label. Not sure if that is a "version date" or a manufacture date.

As a footnote, this is a very smooth motor. Actually, I have never had a V-8 (I have had a bunch of push rods in my days of motoring) as smooth and quiet as this one. It was nearly born with 5W-30 Mobil 1 from my dealer and has had Mobil 1 in it ever since.

99 - 5.3L Z-71 - ticked all the time

03 - 6.0L - 27000 miles and quiet as can be

Both motors use(d) Castrol 5W-30

I work at a chevy dealer. ALL Gen 3 and ALL 96 and later 60 degree v-6`s

have some type of clicking or tapping mostly on startup. Iv`e seen some go

to 200,000 miles making this noise though. Top engine cleaner helps some

but not others. Chevy used to change pistons, but now they say it`s normal.

By the way, mine clicks too. Noise will start at about 17,000 miles.

1995 5.7L Yukon, 98K miles - knocks on hard acceleration since I moved to Colorado (7000 ft above sea level). Headers probably amplify the noise. Mobil 1 synthetic and AC Delco PF52 filter since new every 3000 miles.

1989 Ferrari - knocks a little near 9000 RPM.
