I've only ever bought 1500s so am not familiar with how much to expect off. Like Im looking at a silverado 2500 custome (crew cab 4wd) that has an msrp of $48k.  I am in AR if that matters.  Anyway, what would be a good price on it below MSRP?  Thanks everyone!

At end of April i bought an LT 2500 @ 14-15% off MSRP on higher end of $48k in so cal...

I was gonna get a custom but LT wasnt much more and it had storage plus few other things that custom didnt so i figured its worth it......

The trick to buying a new vehicle is deciding how much you want to pay for the vehicle "out the door".  All those add on charges they have for everything from a couple of gallons of fuel to having to pay for the time it takes them to do the paperwork is 100% negotiable.  Do the research online to build the truck you want.  Online quotes are almost always at MSRP.  You decide what the maximum you can afford is, remembering to keep things like higher insurance premiums on your mind. Do not go over your maximum price.   Do not count on duplicating what someone says they got a vehicle for, very few actually include all the details, and some just plain lie.  Does not matter what they paid.  If you find a vehicle that you want on a lot, take that price and add in all the crap that dealer adds in, plus taxes.  Once you get the out the door price at MSRP, you start your negotiating at a percentage less than that.  Keep in mind that rebates, incentives, and regional deals are sometimes stackable(they all get applied first, off of MSRP).  Sales tax is applied on the price after rebates are applied in most places.  In Ontario Canada we get to pay 13% sales tax on new vehicles(actually it is retail sales tax plus GST), plus the $100 AC tax.  I start at 15% off of the full list price, plus all their little bullshit fees, sales taxes etc.  I only talk in out the door price.  I don't care how he gets to the price, I am only going to pay the last number on the invoice.  If there is a trade in that adds some complexity to the formula.  I have luckily been buying all my vehicles from the same salesman at the same dealership since early 90s.  He knows that I am not going to give a deposit so he can go see the sales manager to talk about how much more they can squeeze me for.  The last two purchases I followed him into the sales manager's office and sat down.  Figured I would save him the trouble of having to walk back and forth.  The most important thing to remember is there are more than one dealer out there.  If you are not getting anywhere, or you just don't feel good about the salesman, get up and leave.  If the salesman is good he will follow you, talking the whole time.  Don't stop unless he says something that catches your attention.

I have heard some stories in the last few years that need to be listened to.  Do not give your license or credit card to the salesman to hold for any reason other than you have reached an agreement on the price and you are going to purchase it, or you are going for a test drive.  Do not leave your drivers license with him while you are gone.  First off, if he says here's a photocopy, I will give your license back when we get back.  Sorry, no need for them to hold your drivers license.  Some dealers use that ploy to keep you there.  Same as credit card.  There is no reason to have to give a deposit just to get your offer considered.  Walk away if they say they need that to show you are interested.  I am sitting there, that is enough proof I am serious.  If you keep all you possessions with you at all times, including the keys to your car that they took so they could do an appraisal on the value of your trade in.  Wait till you have the keys back in your hands before discussing the price.

And don't get hung up on what someone else got there's for, its a different vehicle at a different time from a different dealer that likely has a different sales volume and a different deal with GM.

Thanks guys.  Ive bought probably 12 new vehicles over the years and I worked in auto finance when I first graduated college, so I get the process. Just wasn't seeing discounts listed on websites more than about 2-3k so was just curious.   Thanks everyone!  Appreciate the help!

spent 2 months and talked to a ton of dealers, local and in other states.....it was lot of work actually!

but i did my whole deal via email and text....never set foot in dealership and signed papers on my front porch when they delivered the truck.....was easiest transaction and process ever buying a vehicle.....never do it another way

I'd be curious to know how you did once you make a deal.  My dealer has a Custom coming in w/ my name on it, and I'm also upgrading from a half ton.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
