Hey guys am new to the forum am looking to get some help and info on a transmission replacement. So my problem is that my transmission went out last week it started suddering and overheating to about 240 its been slipping and sounds horrible, so my questions how hard is it to replace it? I found a used one for 800 bucks the only thing that stops me is the reflashing, is it expensive? Can i reflash it or does it have to be done by the dealership? Ive replaced 4 transmissions on older 99-07 silverado so the mechanics is not an issue its the programing that stops me. I found a shop that does it for 2500 installed but if i can do it my self and save some money am all for it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Unless you own the tools and software to do the flash, you can't do that yourself.

If you find a transmission to swap in, do that with a new converter and tow it to a dealer to have them flash the TCM to match your PCM/OS/VIN so everything jives.

Its a 2014 silverado 5.3 2wd lt, i started noticing a weird hard shift from 2-3 and 3-2 around 100k while i was still under warranty i took it in a few times for service but they told me it was normal and just gave me the run around till my warranty expired, the truck has 140k now as i travel alot (56hr round trip into mexico) every year.

By chance did you have the transmission serviced prior to the issues happening?  Like a Tranny service/fluid change/flush?  I'm a big believer in tranny service every 30,000-40,000 miles on these trannies.

I got the truck with 60k and had the fluids replaced at around 100k, they even told me they changed some valve bodies but after that it had a weird grinding sound at cold starts so i fugure now they changed the valve bodies but did not replace the the fluids because it was missing like 1 and a half quarts when i checked it

Swapping the TCM is possible but if your transmission was trashed on the inside that stuff did cover the TCM and go through it on the "pillows". You'd need to inspect your TCM too to make sure it's still in good condition.

All the screens must be clean and not damaged.

Just a question.

Does it bother you that a used transmission is of unknown history and condition?

Yeah it does but i just dont have 2500 to 4k right now spend on it am hoping to find maybe a newer one or a rebuilt one and do the labor my self i have been getting quotes and the cheapest ive found is 2500 but its not a big shop and the rest charge me from 3500 to 4000
