Well, I finally pulled the trigger and updated from my 40 year old Chevy C10. I bought a 2018 Silverado LT 5.3L with 39,000. Truck is clean as a whistle. Are there anything items I should keep an eye out for as I put some miles on this truck?  One thing that baffles me is the oil requirement, 0w-20? I know our work trucks, 2012 Sierras with the 4.8 liter V8s say to use 0w-30 Dextos. But why such a light weight oil in my newer truck? Guess I'm to used of using 15w-40 oils in my old truck 5.7L.  Any enlightenments are welcome. Oil recommendations as well.

Those 4.8's run 5W30 from the factory and these new trucks run 0W20 because there are much tighter tolerances inside the engine for bearings/pumps etc. It's also for fuel mileage going to a 0W20, they try to get the most they can out of it because of emissions requirements.

You could run a 5W20 or 5W30 if you really wanted to because you live in the desert. You probably don't have to worry about 0 degree cold starts. But if you still have a warranty you will want to stay with 0W20 for now.

Welcome to the site.

Congratulations on your new to you truck.

Thin oil equals better MPG.

Yeah, 75% or so of the US experience colder climate, so the 0W20 works good, but if you live in the hotter climate, 0W30 or 5W30 would do fine, I live in FLA and use 0W30.
