Thanks for your help in advance! I've seen some other threads on this, but nothing that covers what cats I can use to replace the bad ones. I bought a 14' Chev with the 5.3 just a couple months ago. Several problems since then. I just took it to a mechanic because it had a check engine light on and wouldn't pass emissions. They said it's a bad fuel pump and would need to be replaced with a high pressure. So we did that for $1,000 but the two codes came up again the next day. P0430, P0420. I know one of the cats was already replaced and I was told it's a good quality one.

I was told by the same shop that did the fuel pump that only OEM cats will work/not throw the codes. Are there aftermarket cats that will work so I don't have to drop another $2,000 for OEM cats?

Not sure about your '14, (how many miles?) is it possible covered under the emissions warranty? My '17 5.3 V8 threw the same does at about 33k & about 9 months ago & GM replaced them under the warranty. worth checking into. My '17 actually has (3) cats all built into (1) "Y" pipe. Rockauto has some other brands. There's also a modification you can do to the O2 sensor mount that moves it out a little that some have had luck with. Search Youtube for it. Just a couple suggestions.

The Design and Defect warranty covers repair of emission control or emission related parts which fail to function or function improperly because of a defect in materials or workmanship during the vehicle's first 2 years/24,000 miles (8 years/80,000 miles for specified major components). The manufacturer can deny this warranty coverage if evidence shows that the emission component failure was caused by improper use or maintenance and not caused by a defect.

Cheap Chicom cats do not last at all.  Magnaflow cats and Y-pipe are what I put on mine.  If one cat was replaced and it is throwing codes again, the fuel pump problem likely took it out and it will need replacing.

144k miles. That makes sense on the new fuel

That makes sense on the fuel pump killing the new cat. How long have the Magnaflow been on your truck with no codes?

Thanks for the reply. it has 144k so I don't think it would be covered, but good thought! I saw a video actually about that mod you can do. I'd have to find a shop that could do it haha. Worth looking into.

Three years this month and 36K miles ago.

Any updates on this?

My 14, 5.3L 105K miles are coming up with the same codes.  This is after all Converters have been replaced, all O2 sensors, spark plugs and wires, New exhaust pipes from the header on out.  Truck cranks with no issue, but then drops below 1000rpm then dies out.  3 different mechanic shops and 5K later, no results on getting it finished.  Last Mechanic says the after market converters are the problem and these trucks can only use GM converters.  Im in the process of trying to get some money back for the after market ones then put on GM converters.  But has anyone else heard of this problem?

I don't have an update on this but did replace the catalytic converters on my 2015 Silverado with some Catco. See link to product below: That was few months and about 10k miles ago. I can't tell you how long they'll last but the truck seems to be working fine since they were replaced. The Check Engine light kept coming on. The truck didn't really give me any trouble except for the light and the fact that the remote start wouldn't work (because of the check engine light). Took it to the shop. Mechanic told me it was the cats and suggested using these. He order/installed them and now she's back to normal.

I have a 2014 Silverado with 242k on it. I also have been getting the error codes intermittently. They come on for a couple days then go off for a couple months.

Definitely have lost some power and gas mileage is down as well.

I was going to take it to my local muffler shop and have them replaced, now I'm not so sure.

Guess I need to ask the right questions and make sure to get a warranty.
