50k is when i noticed my oil light. Every other Saturday for about 3 months the service dept. would wait 15 minutes and document then top up the oil. Then a month in the shop to change out the block for a scored cylinder wall. They are looking for a consistent consumption of over 1 litre for every 3200km (which is a joke think over 3 litre per oil change is acceptable).

For accurate level checks, do them in the morning before the first start, rather than at fill-ups.

Normal GM operation, I always drove with a liter of oil in the back lol.  Just GM junk always been that way.

Well..I hope that's not the case. I had a '15 Yukon with the 6.2L. Sold it at 150,000 miles; never had a low oil issue (but had other issues - gotta love AFM and those lifters)

These motors do consume oil for sure, but not the amount the OP is describing. That is an excessive amount imo, i have almost 8 years and over 50k on my 6.2 and i might need to add a half quart after 6+ months of use. As you can see i don't put a ton of miles on it but not all 6.2's consume oil at this rate.

 

I agree though that no doubt GM will come back with the it's within range excuse.

"never had a low oil issue" but you did add oil all GM LS engines burn oil more then any other engine from any maker.

Interesting to hear about GM engines burning oil. Not a Silverado, but I am the original owner of a 2010 Camaro SS with the 6.2 L99. Only 48K miles, but has never burned oil. You sure it’s not seeping??

I have a 2020 Chevy Silverado with 10,000 miles on it it has the 6.2 L in it and I noticed it is using a lot of oil it’s not burning it I don’t understand. I’ve had three oil changes in that 10,000 mile time. How can this truck be using so much oil it’s not leaking

I have a 2020 Denali 2500HD.  I had the low oil light come on at least once before.  Around 12,000 miles and again around 17,000.  But I explained it away because I was towing my RV about 1800 miles on the one occasion.  Well, I have 23,000 now, about 2400 since my last oil change.  Full synthetic.  And it took 3 quarts to get it squarely in the cross hatch on the dip stick.

 

No oil on the ground.  This is an expensive truck so dumping it is a lousy choice after 2 years.

So, contacted GM.  That bore no fruit.  The assistance is to contact the dealer to express my concern (I can do that) and schedule an appointment (I can do that to).  

 

What I found is a service bulletin that say to change the oil to start an oil consumption test and then routinely complete a log they attached to the bulletin.  Dealer did not change the oil and told me to come back in 2000 miles for them to check the oil.

 

Hmm, the quantity of oil in the engine is unknown since I added three based on the dip stick (not very scientific).  I would be well past my oil change interval (not good) and, they did not check my service detalis.  If they had, they would have noticed they only puy 6 quarts in at the last oil change.

 

Unless something drastic changes, it is looking like I will be selling this truck.  And if I do, will be my last GMC.  Loyalty out the window.  Been a lifelong GM customer, buying a new one sometimes in 2 years.

I took my truck in every Saturday and they documented any top ups they did. This went on for over a couple months. If your consumption is under the max allowable amount they will tell you your truck is not covered under warranty.

I've owned several newer Jeeps and a Subaru Forester that both used oil. The Subaru would constantly kick on the low oil light about 2/3 way through its typical oil change period. I think it's a common biproduct of newer engines unfortunately.

Well you're not going to like this but,

If the check oil light coming on is stored in memory and can be read or you admitted it came on I would void your warranty.

 

I get it's a safety device to prevent ruining an engine, but come on how hard is it to check the oil level regularly.

No excuse in my book.

I was an operating engineer for 7 years and the owner would fire you if they found a piece of equipment you had used was low on oil. Yes, this was before low oil lights.

      Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.

      Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,

      Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.

      So, lot's of googling and reading, and a trial fit found, that indeed they hit the newer fatter caliper. I did some re-testing today, and found just 3/16" worth of washers was enough for the wheel to spin freely. I added 2 more on each, and again it spun freely. Tested lock to lock with the 4 washers, about 5/16" not quite the 3/8" Im considering, but pretty close. No issues. I've been looking at the BORA .375" spacers and using extended lugnuts to get back lost thread due to the spacer. All the ET lugs I've seen are all .33" reach inside the wheel lug holes. For those that don't like spacers or think they're unsafe, I think it depends on what type of spacers you're using and making sure you get good quality hubcentric ones, and if you're using bolt on ones, regular mainenance, checking the spacer lugs. Not wanting or needing that much spread. Looking for the minimum that will let me run these rims and tires.  it does look to stick out a little, but I really want put these on. and use the stock all-terrains in the winter.
